Lou Xiaoying, a poor dying woman aged 88 residing in the eastern Zhejiang province of China, has so far saved more than 30 babies abandoned in garbages. She is a role model to the modern consumerist world.

A Chinese Mother Teresa
In spite of her utter poverty, Lou Xiaoying’s motherly heart is unable to accept people’s heartless cruelty of throwing stillborn and just-born babies into trash dust bins. Managing her living by recycling rubbish, this old woman has so far rescued and raised more than 30 babies thrown into garbages of her neighborhood. The heroic humanitarian efforts of this simple rural woman of China have come to light only recently.
Lou is suffering from kidney failure and is being treated in a hospital today. She is now 88 years old. She is dying with pains. Yet she is quite happy that she could save more than 30 babies from the jaws of death. She is able to smile at the light of life-candle that she could lit so far instead of cursing the darkness of the heartless people who threw the innocent babies and threatening of the cruel laws of the government that are causing such merciless killings.

Lou Xiaoying earns her meager living by recycling the garbage that she collects from the neighborhoods of Jinhua, in the eastern Zhejiang province of China. While collecting garbage she was shocked to find human bodies of stillborn or just-born babies thrown into the garbage heaps. Out of 30 children she could rescue, four she has kept and is raising herself and others she has given to relatives and friends who had accepted to raise them up. Lou lost her husband Li Zin 17 years ago. But still she is an inspiring mother to save the dying babies. The last child, whom she has named Zhang Qilin, was found only seven years ago in a trash dustbin when Lou was already 82. The Chinese words Zhang Qilin literally mean “rare and precious”. Yes, the motherly heart of Lou dares not to be baffled at the hardships of raising babies or facing the “one-child” law of the government.
Lou said, while explaining how she saved her last son Zhang, “Even though I was already getting old I could not simply ignore the baby and leave him to die in the trash. He looked so sweet and so needy. I had to take him home with me.”
Zhang is now a thriving little boy, who is happy and healthy running around his ailing mom’s hospital bed. He is too innocent to know how that this heaven-sent angel had saved his life from the heaps of garbage.
Lou values human life more than anything else. She still wonders at the hard-heartedness of the modern lifestyle that dares to throw away innocent babies into trash dustbins.

While carrying on the collection for her recycling, forty years ago, Lou was shocked to find a baby girl thrown into the rubbish. The baby was just lying amongst the junk on the street, abandoned by someone who could not share the responsibility of raising her up. She was on the verge of her death when Lou rescued her and taken her home. Watching her grow and become stronger has given Lou such happiness that it has inspired her to rescue more than 30 babies from garbages.

Modern world today is killing infants for so many selfish reasons. Infanticide, especially killing of female babies, is growing more and more. Man prefers the pleasure of sex rather than taking up the pain of responsible parenthood. Let the living saint Lou be an inspiration!
