Amazing Replica Noahs Ark

You have to hand it to Dutch Carpenter Johan Huibers, who incredibly has spent three years and over £1 million in the building of a life-size replica of Noah's Ark, which the eccentric Johan intends to sail up the river Thames in time for the for London Olympics.

Ark 2

This truly biblical feat was, the man claims, inspired by a twenty year old dream - akin to the biblical tale in Genesis, he dreamt that part of his native Holland was submerged in a flood - since which time he had been obsessed with using his carpentry skills to bring the ark to life, having in fact - in 2004 - built a half-scale version which he sailed along the canals of his home nation.

Ark 3

That smaller prototype, when opened it to the public, had tourists flocking to see it, all admissions proceeds going straight into funding the building of a full-size model of the ark that god reportedly commanded Noah to prepare for a great flood. Johan followed the specified instructions - that the vessel be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high - this ancient unit of measurement (based on the length of the forearm) - converted to work out that this ark must be around 450ft in length.

Ark 4

Nicknamed Johan's Ark, this mighty vessel is by no means big enough to hold two of every animal on earth, though 1500 people, as well as a life-size plastic creatures menagerie and a few live chickens can be accommodated on the almost 3,000 ton boat and is made from steel reinforced Swedish pine.

Ark 5

This stunningly beautiful vessel has been docked in Dordrecht, where Johan assembled it with the help of some friends and two of his children, well aware that in the 15th century, Dordrecht had suffered, St Elizabeth's flood, thought to have claimed up to 10,000 lives, and one of the deadliest floods in history. Perhaps Johan thinks that global warming might see history repeating itself?
