Listed here are some unexplained mysteries and strange sites found throughout the United States that have baffled researchers and scientists since their discovery. All of the items are apparently hundreds and in some cases thousands of years old.
Unexplained Archaeology Mysteries in the USA
What are some of the most bizarre ancient unexplained mysteries in the United States? Surprising to most people but there are a good number of ancient structures and carvings that have baffled scientists and researchers for decades now that are found throughout the country. Many of these ancient discoveries seem to point to explorers discovering America hundreds and even thousands of years before Columbus did. Listed below are some of these ancient discoveries. Mystery Hill or America’s Stonehenge
Located on a hilltop in North Salem, New Hampshire, is perhaps America’s biggest unexplained ancient structures. The area consists of a series of stone chambers, walls, secret underground passages and strange inscriptions. Over the years, the structures have been nicknamed America’s Stonehenge even though there are no standing stones like the ones in England. Instead, the area is built by stacked stones in conjunction with natural rock formations. In total, there are 22 structures over 20 acres of land. Unfortunately, researchers have no idea who built the structures or even when they were built. Some theories which have been proposed range from a group of Irish monks, the Knights Templar, or a group of Viking explorers being responsible for the construction of these ancient structures but so far, there is no conclusive evidence pointing in any one direction. Researchers have estimated the construction of these structures at anywhere from 4000 to 500 years old with most opinions falling in the 500 to 1000 year old range.
Gungywamp
Located on approximately 20 acres of land near Groton, Connecticut are a series of mysterious standing stones, rock houses, earthen mounds and underground stone chambers. No conclusive evidence has been located at the site to determine exactly who built these structures. There have been shards of china found during archaeology digs but scientists are uncertain whether these pieces of china were introduced during the construction of the structures or perhaps people used the land after the site was already constructed. There are numerous strange legends that are associated with this site such as magnetically charged fields that can give you special powers and a certain cliff where anyone who goes there leaves with severe depression.
Dolmens: Tripod Rock and Balanced Rock
These two locations have caused scientists to completely disagree on whether the structures are man-made or were just leftovers from the last glacial meltdown. Both locations consists of a large megaton rock that is balanced (both locations look as if the large stone will topple over any minutes) on top of numerous smaller rocks. Check out the pictures below to see what your opinion is on whether these structures are natural or were man-made. Or, go ahead and visit the two sites. Tripod Rock is located on the top of Pyramid Mountain between the borders of Kinnelon and Montville in New Jersey. Balanced Rock is located in North Salem, New York.
Celestial Stones – Blue Mounds State Park
Located in The Blue Mounds State Park near Luverne, Minnesota is a series of very old and very odd set of rocks. The stones are arranged in a quarter mile long line and are arranged to mark the turning of the seasons. On both of the Fall and Spring equinoxes, the sun rises directly on the East end of the line and sets on the West. No one knows who actually arranged the stones but numerous theories have been proposed including Norse explorers, a local Native American tribe or even an ancient culture that predated the known Indian tribes. Unfortunately, there is no way to date these rocks and up to this point there has not been any relics found in the area either.
Underwater Pyramids of Wisconsin
Located in Rock Lake near Aztalan State Park in Jefferson County, Wisconsin are perhaps the most important ancient structures that exist in the United States. The structures were first seen or reported in 1900 by local duck hunters although local Indian tribes spoke of “Rock Tepees” for many years before this discovery. The Indians told stories of these strange structures that were on the bottom of the lake and were constructed by ancient foreigners. Unfortunately, the structures are hardly ever visible as the water is very murky and even high tech equipment doesn’t function properly in the waters of this lake. Every now and then, fisherman and divers do catch glimpses of the structures though. Estimates vary as to the size of the structures but most researchers have narrowed it down to being around 30 feet high and one hundred feet long for each structure. In total, there are at least 3 pyramid shaped structures in the lake and there maybe lots more that are on the smaller scale. Explanations for these formations vary from the results of glacial action to man-made structures that were constructed before the area was flooded with water which would make this site several thousands of years old. There is some support for this theory in that a local Indian Tribe named the Mississippians constructed pyramid shaped mounds over one thousand years ago.
