It was on 16th August last year that the family which produces the magazine Nature Friend had the most incredible slice of good fortune, in capturing these images.

Just to actually SEE an extremely rare albino ruby-throated hummingbird is almost beyond belief, yet this environmentally aware set of Virginia teenagers and preteens actually had cameras with them.

Albino Two

Marlin, 16, Shaphan, 14, Darren, 12 and Allen, 9, are the older children of Kevin and Bethany Shank, all ot them on hand in Staunton, Virginia, USA on that fateful day when they spotted the unbelievably rare bird at the home of Ed and Nancy Lawler, close by a bird feeder.

Albino Three

Upon hearing that other birders were watching the elusive bird at feeders a mere 30 miles from their own home, the Shanks family immediately headed in that direction. On getting there they set up cameras in different spots, taking turns snapping images between August 12 - 27.

Albino Four

The family were convinced that they might never in their lives the opportunity to photograph an albino hummingbird again, so they felt they simply had to succeed, and the results are truly stunning.

Wow! I once wrote a Hummingbird poem inspired by Seal's and Croft's song. This albino blew me away. Beautiful! Thanks, Tony.
