DSK faces potential charges of complicity in pimping and abuse of public funds from his dealings with a cross-border prostitution ring. Questioning brings new revelations on past exploits.

From one scandal to another
Hard on the heels of Dominique Strauss-Khan’s escape from charges of the attempted rape of the journalist Tristane Banon because of the French statute of limitations on sex crimes last October, the French sexophile found himself embroiled in a new scandal concerning a prostitution ring operating out of the Carlton hotel in Lille on the French-Belgian border.
An organized prostitution and trafficking ring
Adult prostitution per se is not illegal in France but Police attention was attracted by the fact that some of the girls in the ring were under the legal age of 18 and by the extent of the operation. Prostitutes were being imported from Belgium as well as recruited locally and were being supplied for lascivious parties not just in Lille but also in Paris and Washington. Eight people have already been indicted, including a Police commissioner and a lawyer as well as three of the hotel’s managers.
How deeply was DSK involved?
When the investigation started, last October, DSK’s involvement was considered to be ‘secondary’ and, with typical bravado, he was pushing to be interviewed quickly to dispel the ‘innuendo and malicious gossip’. Now, after months of sifting the evidence, the investigating judge is interrogating DSK on potential charges of complicity in trafficking in women and abuse of public funds.
One of DSK’s closest associates, Fabrice Paszkowski, head of a medical device company, organised lascivious parties (in other words ‘orgies’), procuring prostitutes from the Lille Carlton Hotel ring. DSK was a regular participant in these parties, which took place in Paris and in Washington. There is no question that DSK did not take part in these orgiastic events: he has been identified as a ‘client’ by two prostitutes and his name appears on invoices seized when the prostitution ring’s organisers were arrested.
The questions that DSK faces revolve around whether he knew that the women whose services he was enjoying at these parties were prostitutes, the extent to which he was involved in providing the women for the parties and the cost, and the source of any funds he may have used in arranging or attending the parties. If he was involved in any way in organizing or funding these parties, he could face charges of complicity in trafficking women and pandering (pimping). If he charged any expenses involved in organizing or attending these parties to the IMF, he could face charges of abuse of public funds.
Ms Diallo was the ‘dessert’
Of particular interest to the investigation is a two-day ‘party’ arranged in Washington on 11th to 13th May 2011, in which DSK figured prominently. Prostitutes were shipped in specially from the Lille ring. Amazingly, this marathon orgy ended just the day before DSK’s sexual encounter with Ms Nafissatou Diallo in the Sofitel on Saturday the 14th. Perhaps she was fortunate that the French Casanova had already discharged so much of his sexual battery.
A future for DSK?
Given the latitude usually accorded to high-ranking public figures in France, DSK is likely to escape from this latest ‘affaire’ once again but both the French Police and the French media are evidently now considering him ‘fair game’ in ways that would have been unthinkable much less than a year ago. This new ‘affaire’ will continue to make him too much of a ‘hot potato’ for his sympathisers in the Establishment to bring him back into the fold. They may find him some quiet post in which to lie low for a while. Perhaps he could be tucked away in some Middle Eastern embassy where he will not be tempted with female flesh, although he would no doubt prefer some cultural exchange position in a West African territory.
In the meantime, his wife, Anne Sinclair, has taken a job as Editor of the French Huffington Post. She has decided to stand by her delinquent Lothario for reasons of her own but perhaps is finding that the champagne tastes and legal fees of her unemployed spouse are straining even her considerable personal fortune. Then again, perhaps she finds running a magazine provides a quieter pace than keeping up with the demands of her insatiable partner. If a pharmaceutical company could isolate what drives DSK’s performance and market it, the sales would outstrip Viagra and Cialis combined.

Fact check: On May 11, 2011, DSK was in Switzerland for close-door meetings with bankers and financial ministers. This is documented by the press.
