Environmental Graffiti in Manila

In a move that will please both the environmentalists of the world and the graffiti artist community, authorities in manila are combining the two aspects of modern life in an effort to combat rising pollution from exhaust gases in Manila, capitol of the Phillipines.
The artists concerned have been tasked with transforming the appearance of dingy concrete walls along the main highway of the city, countless vehicles daily streaming past and belching filthy exhaust fumes into the environment. The reason is actually two-fold and quite ingenious.

These Epifanio delos Santos Avenue - EDSA - murals, now coming to colourful life through the talents of street artists are not only just artistic in nature, but serve as air purifying vessels because they are created with an innovative kind of paint.

10 graffiti artists, both local and foreign were asked to cover over 8,000 square meters of concrete with painted imagery along the parts of the EDSA where it narrows, known as choke points. These are now much more pleasant to pass by, with lovely flowers appearing amongst the distinctive green paint, artists involved in creating the highway masterpieces enthusiastic, to say the least.

It would undoubtedly be a very good thing if far more paintings like these appeared in cities around the world, where a huge need for such air-cleaning paintings, along with the benefits of the visual stimulation of positive and inspiring artwork exists. Even though this is hardly a permanent solution to the problem, it is still a huge step in the right direction.

I'm glad to hear about this type of paint. Manila and its surrounding areas really need it. I look forward to see the improvement next time I come home.
