This column is about the stark contrast between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama on Foreign Policy

Foreign Policy is a Romney Weakness

Watching Vice President Joe Biden trot out his “Osama bin Laden is dead and G.M. Is alive” line in a speech at New York University on Thursday reminded me
once again why he may be the best surrogate that the Obama Administration has (one William Jefferson Clinton included). The Vice President was in rare form eviscerating presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney on his lack of foreign policy chops.

What is good for the goose is clearly good for the gander, because elected Republicans and the right-wing smear machine have been distorting President Obama's record on foreign policy for months now. Gov. Romney's senior foreign policy advisor Richard S. Williamson recently said “In the end this President will lose because he failed on the economy, but the same naivete and fecklessness has been evident on the foreign policy side as well. And we welcome having that debate” The former Gov. of Massachusettes has also not been shy with his critiques, his most popular mantra being “I will never apologize for America” as if The President has worn out the knees on his slacks from bowing to the Saudis and the Iranians.

Sitting back and listening to all of this from the right, Ive wondered is this really a conversation these guys want to have? I'm mean we are talking about President Barack Obama the guy who ended the long national nightmare of the Iraq War, The guy who overthrew the brutal dictatorships of Hosni Mumbarak and Mummar Qaddafi, The guy who he has worked tirelessly to rebuild bridges between The United States and a lot of it's European allies, bridges that were absolutely torched by the Bush Administration.

Of course the biggest foreign policy accomplishment of The Obama Administration was the killing of Osama bin Laden, a man responsible for the deaths of over 3,000 americans on September 11, 2001. In making that call the President displayed the bravery, the courage, and quite frankly the stones that Mitt Romney doesn't have. Imagine if the slightest thing would have gone wrong, our soldiers don't make it out alive, or we take out the wrong guy, does anybody realize what an international catastrophe it would have been. It would have been “The Bay of Pigs” on steroids.

Fortunately, everything did turn out for the better further proving the point that the President has been very hawkish on foreign policy, in a lot of cases too hawkish. I will be the first too admit that drone strikes in Yemen on innocent people is a deep concern, and is reminiscent George W. Bush, also troop acceleration in Afghanistan has been dissapointing.

The problem for the Romney crew is that while bashing the President they have yet to offer their own vision for the global landscape, outside of the usual bombing of Iran and dealing with Russia as if we are stuck in a 1950s cold war. The Vice President wrapped up his speech by saying that “It seems to me that Gov. Romney's fundamental thinking about the role of the President on foreign policy is fundamentally wrong, That kind of thinking may work for a CEO, but I assure you it will not work and cannot work for a President and will not work for a commander and chief”.At the moment I don't know if there have been truer words spoken in this campaign.
