Fun Tomato Fight

If you happened to be heading to Spain on holiday this year, in the second half of August, then you need to heading for Valencia, because the most outrageous, fun-filled, messy food-fight you join in with happens at a little town nearby, last Wednesday of August every year, and you really do not want to miss out on this incredible frivolity.
La Tomatina is the name they give to this super scrap, held in the square of Buñol, a forty minute train ride from whole thing is this gloriously orchestrated tomato fight, always happening between 11am and 1pm on the day in question. So popular is this amazing fun-fest that the small town is always utterly swamped by tens of thousands of eager visitors.

Most arrive there by train, simply because there is no place for vehicles to be left, and after the heavy goods vehicles arrive, delivering their loads of squashy tomatoes, you would be very lucky to get anywhere near the action, because the press of people is so enormous, making it good sense to get there much earlier in the day and stake a claim to a good vantage point.

Be aware that the party in the town is already several days old when the big event arrives, so the general mood is one of tipsy revelers and reckless enjoyment. In this large village, normally holding nine thousand inhabitants, the numbers gow to three or four times that many, so you can see how impossible it might be to find a room there.
How this whole thing ever began is still hotly debated, though several theories seek to explain how this little town of Bunyol has become home biggest food-fight od its kind in the world. Most plausible suggestion around is that, in 1945, when an annual parade was going through the town, composed of enormous figures with big heads - Gigantes y Cabezudos , as they are known in Spanish.
Seemingly, these kids accidentally knocked one of the giants over, and he, outraged, started swinging out at people around him, to which the kids retaliated by grabbing some tomatoes, from a nearby vegetable stall and begin throwing them at him. By the time police arrived to break things up, a fully-fledged tomato fight was in progress, and the rest, as they might say, is history

In actual fact the real tomato fight is quite brief, lasting a little over an hour, commencing around eleven in the morning until shortly after one, but the sheer volume of tomatoes thrown, and the incredible states participants get into have to be seen to be believed. Best advice always would be to have a fresh set of clothes with you, packed away securely until the battling ends, for putting on after cleaning yourself off at the public showers in Bunyol, located by the river.
It is true to say that, in the past, local politicians have made countless, fruitless attempts to ban the Tomatina event, to no avail, because the people love it so much they did it anyway, and as the years have passed, it has grown into what is now regarded as one of the most important annual spectales on the Spanish calendar, the popularity showing no sign whatever of waning.
Going to Spain is often more about Sangria, sun and sand than anything else, but if you happen to be in the neighborhood of Valencia on the Wednesday in question, then get on that train for a once-in-a-lifetime feast of fun, getting thoroughly messed up with squishy tomatoes, as you play your part in the food-fight that could well be the most fun you could ever have in an afternoon.

The origins of La Tomatina aren't clear with several theories explaining how Bunyol has become home to the world's biggest tomato fight. However, the most plausible suggests that the most likely explanation dates back to 1945 when an annual parade of enormous figures with big heads (Gigantes y Cabezudos) was passing through the streets of Bunyol.
It seems that some youngsters tried to join in the parade and accidentally knocked over one of the giants who got to his feet and started swinging out at everyone around him. In retaliation the youngsters grabbed some tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stall and started throwing them at him until the police arrived to break things up.
The following year on the same last Wednesday of August these young people returned to the town hall square and started another tomato fight using their own tomatoes. Again the police intervened and in subsequent years the local council tried to ban the 'El día de la Tomatina' but with little success as the event continued to grow year after year reaching the ludicrous size it is today.
