Obviously the owners of this establishment were not thinking straight when they made the decision, because the bad publicity that they get alone will be more costly than the possible cost to their precious furniture.
Just plain Petty
Business owners have the right to set their own prices and product or menu selections. A business owner also has the right to refuse service to anyone why they feel will be a harm to the establishment, whether it be structural, or integral. Having said that, customers have the right to refuse to shop there if they are dissatisfied with the way the business relates to its customers, or if they consider the business to be somewhat against any one group of people or ideal. A business cannot force someone to buy from them and in the same vain, a customer cannot force a business to serve them. Keep in mind though, a business that reflects negatively to certain members of the public, stands a good chance of loosing much of its customer base, and eventually its business.
The book of Proverbs points out, “So now you can pick out what's true and fair, find all the good trails! Lady Wisdom will be your close friend, and Brother Knowledge your pleasant companion. Good Sense will scout ahead for danger, Insight will keep an eye out for you. They'll keep you from making wrong turns, or following the bad directions Of those who are lost themselves and can't tell a trail from a tumbleweed, These losers who make a game of evil and throw parties to celebrate perversity, Traveling paths that go nowhere, wandering in a maze of detours and dead ends.”
Charging someone and extra five dollars because they are a few pounds heavier, in my humble opinion, is just plain petty. The great thing about this country is this, there is competition in everything that we do and everywhere we shop. Obviously the owners of this establishment were not thinking straight when they made the decision, because the bad publicity that they get alone will be more costly than the possible cost to their precious furniture. If there was a weight issue where the furniture was concerned, (don't laugh there is such a possibility) they should have made the decision before attending to the Michelle, advising her that they were not equipped to handle more than a certain weight load on the furniture.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you wrote, that we are a nation that have choices, if you chose not to serve to certain individuals then you pay that price...your choice. Good artcle.
