Brotherhood. Definitions of fraternity in any reference will have the word brotherhood. WordIQ defined it as "ritualistic harassment, abuse, or humiliation with requirements to perform meaningless tasks, sometimes as a way of initiation into a social group."Spanking, deprivation of necessities like food, rest and sleep, branding, wearing embarrassing clothing, nudity and even sexually oriented activities are some ways of hazing.

Marvin Reglos

Do fraternities really promote brotherhood? Not in the case of Marvin Reglos, a 25-year old freshmen law student of San Beda College who died on February 19, 2012 in an initiation rite for a fraternity called Lambda Rho Beta.

He was brought to the Unciano Medical Center (Antipolo) where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Reglos will be subject to re-autopsy as requested by his family in order to find out what really caused his death. According to ABS-CBN news, he suffered from blunt force trauma that severely damaged his kidney. A separate report revealed that Reglos had visible injuries in his thigh, arms and back and indication in his head that somehow he bumped onto something.

Marvin Reglos is a good son of Luciano and Myrna Reglos. His mother who had not seen him for three years arrived from Korea where she works as a pre-school teacher. “Siyempre kahit na sino mang magulang, masakit. I cannot describe the feeling. We want justice. Itaas ang pagpaparusa ng mga ganyang hazing sa frat,” Myrna said (ABS-CBN news). Reglos will be buried on Sunday, February 26, 2012.

Is hazing a necessary pre-requisite for brotherhood?

It does not make any sense going through such activity in joining organizations. The youth of today join fraternities not for brotherhood but for social status and belongingness. Some become members but don't live up to the real object of fraternities. Hazing will only result to retaliation of the ones who had undergone it to the next batch of neophytes. Some members even challenge one another on a take-turns paddling to prove who is stronger.

Conflicts between fraternities are very rampant these days and could also lead to loss of lives. Engagement in frivolities that could even include drugs is a commonplace. Do we even think of our parents who send us to school for us and our future to be better? I pity those who send their children to the city to study. I pity those who have no choice but join organizations so that they won't feel out-of-place in their new world in the city. I pity the youth especially the ones coming from provinces who are easily recruited due to inexperience and nescience.

The parents work so hard in order to provide the basic needs of their children including education. It's sad that the children that they love and nurture will undergo hardships and pain that they, themselves, don't do unto them. Marvin Reglos is just one of the victims. May there be justice to his unwanted death. And i think fraternities should be into justice too.

Let’s see what's on THE ANTI-HAZING LAW OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES (REPUBLIC ACT No. 8049)

SECTION 2. No-hazing or initiation rites in any from or manner by a fraternity, sorority or organization shall be allowed without prior written notice to the school authorities or head of organization seven (7) days before the conduct of such initiations. The written notice shall indicate the period of the initiation activities which shall not exceed three (3) days, shall include the names of those to be subjected to such activities, and shall further contain an undertaking that no physical violence be employed by anybody during such initiation rites.

SECTION 4. If the person subjected to hazing or other forms of initiation rites suffers any physical injury or dies as a result thereof, the officers and members of the fraternity, sorority or organization who actually participated in the infliction of physical harm shall be liable as principals.

See the full text of REPUBLIC ACT No. 8049.

The heads of fraternities should be help responsible for acts like this. This was the call of Justice Secretary Leila De Lima for the amendment of the anti-hazing law.
“I think we really need to review it, particularly we should study the doctrine of command responsibility of the heads of fraternities who impliedly or expressly authorized hazing. There must some liability on their part,” said De Lima (who at the same time was a co-founder of a Lamdba Rho allied sorority).

Justice for Marvin Reglos!

There is a lot of ways to make a name for yourself - a lot of ways to prove something. You can be respected and adored and you can win friends and achieve social status without joining such organizations. That’s not even what they are here for. Deaths? Retaliation? Conflicts? Violence? That's not what brotherhood is all about.

Great.... Most fraternities and sororities have transformed to "Cult-Like" groups and that is why I am very skeptical concerning this issue.

Great information cowboy. All young adults and their parents need to be mindful of these stupid hazing rituals done at schools. Nice one. Star quality. Thank you for sharing.:)

Hazing seems to be caused by group violence. Each person in the group would probably not be capable or desirous of causing the suffering inflicted on another student, but en masse, goaded by each other, the violence takes place. No answer but some explanation.

The motives for fraternities before was of great intention. Nowadays, it was transformed into something that requires injuries before becoming a member. thanks for sharing
