Magnificence of Trees
If like me you are a lover of trees, those magnificent life-forms that often have been in existence for hundreds of years, you cannot fail to be awed by the incredible beauty and diversity of tree species, the sometimes spectacular flowers or the astonishing root systems leaving you gasping.
The lead image in this post is that of the tree native to Australia and New Zealand, which when it flowers is truly wondrous, the Jacaranda, though the African Tulip tree – often aptly described as the Flame of the Forest – can certainly rival it for splendor of the blooms, huge orange flowers gladdening the heart of all who see them.
Other blooms that are very memorable are those of different Baobab tree species, such as the Monkey Bread Tree Fruit, also known as Judas Fruit – Thirty seeds within the pods equating to the thirty pieces of Sliver – pollinated by bats, the flowers are a gorgeous creamy white.
The Bombax Tree, another Baobab, originates India, bringing much color to Middle Eastern and Asian streets. Also called the Silk Cotton Tree, it has large red flowers that truly are a spectacular sight when in bloom.
Bombax, however, are notable not just for their wondrous blooms, but also for amazing root systems, such as those growing through the Cambodian Ta Prom Temple, an ancient and truly gigantic example, or that in India, also huge.
Also in India, the National Tree of the country is the Bengal Fig, or Banyan, which can spread out over vast areas. The Great Banyan Tree, a forest in itself was once described as the widest tree in the world, in terms of canopy area, so massive that a 1000ft long road was built around it. This enormous tree continues to spread, people worshipping under it, wandering between mighty aerial roots.
Perhaps the oddest tree of them all, from which the locals obtain a blood-red resin that serves as an ingredient in dyes, as universal medicine, as well as being used in ritual magic and alchemy, the Dragons Blood tree is truly wonderful to behold. These are but a small selection of astounding flowers and features, the world of trees being a truly awesome place in nature.
