When a man robs a bank to get medical care, something is seriously wrong in this country.

A very strange bank robbery

Richard James Verone, after working for the Coca Cola Company for seventeen years, was laid off his job three years ago, and he has not been able to find work since. He has two ruptured discs and an undiagnosed growth on his chest, but with his unemployment benefits expired and with no medical insurance, he cannot afford to get the help he needs. Then he got an idea.

Yesterday, July 26, 2012, Richard walked into an RBC Bank in North Carolina and held it up, demanding one dollar from the teller, who gave him the money. He then went over and sat on the floor, assuring the people in the bank he would cause no trouble, and waited for the cops to arrive and take him to jail. Verone, who has never been in trouble with the law, said he felt that in jail he might get the medical attention he needs.

Very thought provoking write up dear Steve! Yes, in India also we have regular criminals who want to be in jail for their daily necessities! Very pathetic situation! Thanks for sharing!

Well, Steve, it is obvious that Richard James Verone doesn't know anything about the state of medical care within the state prison systems. As you may or may not know, I have friends and relatives that work in a couple of prison systems in the northeastern region of the United States, and they all tell me that the medical care that inmates receive borders on malpractice. If Richard James Verone is lucky, the feds will pick it up and he'll end up in the Federal BOP System where he will receive decent care. Odds are though, considering the circumstances, he will end up with a slap on the wrist or probation and then he will be pretty much right back where he started from except for the blot on his record.
What ever the case, it is a shameful editorial on our society when an honest man has to turn to crime in an attempt to get the medical care he deserves.

I agree Jerry, that he doesn't stand much of a chance to get decent medical care. My point was that it's a shame he had to take such a desperate measure.

I totally agree with you on that, Steve. That was what I meant with my closing sentence, "What ever the case, it is a shameful editorial on our society when an honest man has to turn to crime in an attempt to get the medical care he deserves."

I agree with Jerry, the medical care he will receive it not much in the prison system. I am now working on a case for a mentally challenged person that was given 26 years for trespassing, after the courts allowed him to be his own representation in court, even though he has a history of mental illness. Now he is in prison and they have not done a thing with him for his illness. Try getting a good and clear defense with someone that is schizophrenic and under no doctors care, not easy, sadly. Thank you for sharing.:)

Desperate situation warrants desperate response. When we are pushed to the wall, we too act in similar fashion. When hope is lost everything is lost, sadly. Thanks for the share, Steve - siva

I can't imagine why he thought he would get medical care in jail. He can write a note to a guard for attention, who might or might not read it, and he might or might not see a doctor, who might or might not dole out an aspirin.
