Man Utd's 2010-11 Title Win: A Guide and Explanation
Manchester United - The Dominant Force
As the 2010-11 season began, Chelsea were the favourites to win the English Premier League. Manchester United however, had other ideas, and showed their strength with a convincing 3-1 win in the Community Shield match at Wembley.
It was Chelsea however, who set the early season pace, with United winning just 5 of their first 10 games. A trend began that was to continue all season in domestic football; United were dominant at home but distinctly average when playing away. Two late goals against Wolverhampton showed their knack for scoring late on had not diminished, but they seemed to be drawing too many matches if they wanted to keep up with Chelsea.
By Christmas however, the Blues too had slipped up, losing their form and the lead in the Premiership. It was Arsenal who looked like United's main rivals, rekindling a rivalry that flared up around a decade ago. United kept a firm grip on the topspot until the end of the season, never letting up in their play. On several occasions, most notably against West Ham and Blackpool, they showed resilience and a never-say-die attitude to come from behind and claim all 3 points.
Chelsea mounted a late charge but were ultimately stopped by United themselves, who produced a stunning performance to beat the incumbent champions 2-1 at Old Trafford. It was 'The Theatre of Dreams' that, among other things, was the key to United regaining their crown. Dropping just two points at home all season was a record no one else could match.
Winning the League was an interesting achievement considering most people's judgement that this was a United team in transition. Young players were coming through in the form of the Da Silva twins and Chicharito in particular, who excelled throughout the season; established players such as Nani grew further into their roles; while older players such as Giggs and Scholes underlined why they will be so difficult to replace with a series of stellar performances - Giggs in particular shining towards the end.
Wayne Rooney's request to leave the club was the only major controversy, but once that was dealt with it seemed nothing could stop United from marching to a record-breaking 19th league crown.
