What could Steve Williams have possibly been thinking?
Button your lip, Stevie, please!
Steve Williams, Tiger Woods' caddy for 12 years, during which Tiger won 13 major golf championships, was given a 'tongue-in-cheek' award the other evening for the 'year's best celebration', a reference to his remark after new employer Adam Scott's victory at the Bridgestone Invitational Golf Tournament, which Williams said "was the best win of my career." Asked what the celebration was all about, Williams said: "It was my aim to shove it right up that black asshole." His comment was reacted to by shock and amazement among the players and golf writers at the ceremony. According to Britain's Daily Mail, one caddie said: "Never have you been in a room and seen so many jaws drop at the same time. We knew he was an idiot but we didn't know he was a racist idiot. I was standing next to a European tour official who said, 'Thank God he is not on our tour.'"
Woods accepts Williams apology
Tiger, in Australia for a tournament, said that he and Williams met yesterday and ironed things out. He said he knew Williams was not a racist and added that Williams had apologized to him personally.

More of a stupid thing to say than racist, but certainly very stupid when you are in the eye of the media.

At least Williams apologized after the fact. It was a degrading remark that only a person without common sense would spill out like that.

I didn't read about this and glad you posted this. I recorded one of Tiger's plays about nine years ago on a VHS blank tape. It is one I will keep and never erase. A very good write up and thanx for sharing this story here. Smiles, Bets

How tiresome. It beggars belief that such slips of the tongue by normal, fallible human beings are being treated as world news. Surely there are more urgent and important events happening around the globe than this? Clearly the mass media has a great deal to answer for in the reporting such inconsequential events. Or are they determined to keep our eyes and ears off the bigger picture?

The media will always report on the human failings of celebrities. Because there's no royal family in America, we treat our Hollywood stars and sports stars as royalty.

Williams' words were pretty dumb, and seem to smack of kicking a man when he is down. I am glad he is man enough to apologise to Woods in person, and that Woods is man enough to accept the apology.

I think Steve went a bit overboard, and I think Tiger was very graciouis to him in accepting his apology.

Sometimes those "Sorta people" hold back these feelings for a long time before exploding, racism will never die down because of people like them...

A mechanic (black) was driving me to my car and he said, "If people on this street saw me with you there would be trouble". He brought it up, I had not even thought about it. Who was keeping the problem alive?

Racism keeps the problem alive. It's high time we moved past it and realize we are all brothers and sisters.
