Roadkill Beer

When owners James Watt and Martin Dickie founded the Brew Dog brewery in 2006, they had an ambition to create something completely new with their beer, and how well they have succeeded, having, since 2009, held the title of the world’s strongest beer producer on no fewer than three occasions.

They give the beers really quirky names, and the strongest they ever produced, at 55% volume, was named The End of History, the very limited edition brew being the culmination of their strong beer brewing enterprise. A blond Belgian style of ale, this knockout stuff is infused with fresh Juniper berries and nettles from the Scottish Highlands..

Only 12 bottles were ever produced, each individually certificated and for extra dramatic effect, presented in either a stuffed stoat or grey squirrel, this conically gruesome packaging created by a taxidermist of exceptional ability, all animals involved being road kill victims, A run of just 12 bottles, four squirrels,7 stoats and one grey Hare, comprised the total, the beer selling for an astounding £500 a bottle.

The Aberdeen brewery employed a Doncaster Taxidermist for the job, each animal being individually outfitted, with things as diverse as kilts and Top hats, to hold bottles of beer far stronger than any vodka oe whiskey, though the makers recommend drinking it in the same way, one shot at a time. The founders say that they wanted to tear up conventions, blur distinctions and push brewing and beer packaging to its absolute limits, with the beer to end all beers.

Named in honor of of philosopher Francis Fukuyama, who wrote book so titled, seeing western democracy as the end point of man’s political evolution and consequently the end of history. The brewers stated that this series was to be the last high abv beer to be brewed by them, having reached, the end point of their research into extreme brewing, and thus the end of beer.

Not that they have stopped producing amazing beers, not at all. They put out an incredible beer named Tactical Nuclear Penguin, which is made through a freeze distillation process, repeated three times, after 14-months of aging process in double barrels. With a 27% ABV Tactical Nuclear Penguin is a strong beer, which should be enjoyed in small servings, in the same manner as one would enjoy a fine whiskey, according to the brewers.

Still producing some truly fantastic brews, including the 41% ABV Sink The Bismark beer, this pair of inventive young Scots are taking the brewing world by storm, and if you want to see for yourself what they have on offer now, just go to :http://www.brewdog.com/product.php?id=47 and have a good look around. The End of History is no longer available to buy, no doubt fast becoming a collector’s item, but they have lots more on offer, and the future for this bright young brewery looks bright indeed.
