Society won’t stop unless a marvelous feat is achieved by the scientists.
Outliers
Outliers in the society normally get negative support. They have to fight hard to earn trust and respect, a luxury afforded by the people who live in the box. The way researchers are treated makes their condition equal to outliers. They need to prove that they are important.
Animal in Society
Society stance is paradoxical towards research. Human society considers itself to the top of the pyramid and still it lives in fear. Like animals, their first line of response is defence and not offense.
Distrust: Society’s Defence
Distrust is the best defense society has got against the researchers (indirectly towards research). It seems like pre-renaissance thinking is still widely prevalent in the society, though we claim to be an advanced, adventurous and intelligent society of the 21st century.
Society is not alone
The companies and governments also don’t care much about scientists. They may provide them with some of the most advanced instruments but, monetarily scientists are always on the losing side. In today’s consumerist society (Euphemism for materialistic), no money means no status or respect. It means you are poor.
