Support Mushrooms for Michigan Lawmaker Silenced for using the "V" word
In Michigan, a female legislator was silenced by the Republican leadership for using a word that scared them. Little did the Republicans imagine the response.
How dare you say that word, lady.
Last week, on Tuesday, June 12th, Michigan state representative Lisa Brown, on the floor of the House of Representatives, rose to speak against a Republican sponsored bill which would make it more difficult for women to obtain abortions in that state. She told the Republicans "I'm flattered you're all so concerned about my vagina. But no means no." The next day the Republican house leadership barred her from speaking. They also barred Democratic Representative Barb Byrum from speaking because she had used the word "vasectomy" in the debate. GOP representative Lisa Lyons defended the action, saying "...I fully support Majority Leader Jim Stamas' decision to maintain professionalism and order on the house floor." ???
Representative Brown, along with ten other Democratic lawmakers and several actresses, yesterday performed Eve Ensler's play, the Vagina Monologues, on the Statehouse steps to a crowd of over 2,500 people. Ensler flew in from California to witness the performance and said the punishment meted out by the Republicans was like the Dark Ages. "We're talking about the silencing of women for saying a body part," she said. "Half of these people who are trying to regulate vaginas, they can't even say the word. If we ever knew that the issue about abortion...was not really about fetuses and babies, but really men's terror of women's sexuality and power, I think it's fully evidenced here." Is that ever the truth.
