In the most impressive intelligence coup of modern times, the vastly wealthy, soft-spoken, highly intelligent and well-educated man who had the western world held in terrified thrall for over a decade, has finally been put out of commission. President Barack Obama announced the death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, shot in a fire-fight with US forces, in Pakistan, on May 1st 2011.

Incredibly, the charismatic terrorist leader was located in a million dollar compound less than one kilometer from a Pakistani military academy, deep inside the country, unsuspected by any locals, supposedly. Of course the question has to be raised, of how an inordinately noisy assault with helicopter gunships and other loud weapons, lasting 40 minutes, failed utterly to attract the notice of academy personnel?

The US, we are told, thought it better NOT to inform the Pakistani authorities about this attack beforehand, yet there was apparently NO reaction to the uproar that this assault must have been very audibly causing. Could it be that those academy men, equivalent to officer cadets at Sandhurst, in the UK, had some inkling what might be going on?
This iconic man declared war in1998, on all invaders of Muslim countries, behind the bombings of East African US embassies, the Yemen bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 and scores of other attacks

It is, of course, widely believed that Bin Laden ordered the September 11 2001 twin towers atrocity, along with many others, causing the deaths of many thousands of innocent people, making him number one on the most wanted lists of most western countries. After the assault on the compound, the body of the terrorist leader, confirmed though DNA testing, was buried at sea, after a funeral following Muslim tradition, from an aircraft carrier, within 24 hours of his death.

That this man, in spite of a $25million bounty, has evaded his pursuers so long is testament to his resilience, but the unsurprising news that, during the firefight, Bin Laden used a woman as a human shield just reinforced the ill-will felt toward him. That no local residents were suspicious of the huge compound, with walls almost twenty feet tall seems truly odd, and Pakistani authorities must be squirming with embarrassment.
. It was after the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan that Bin Laden joined the mujahideen fighting beside them with Arab followers, this group later forming the nucleus for what would become Al-Qaeda, most feared terrorist organization of all time. Will his death put an end to it? Of course not, but it may make those still intent on causing mayhem think twice, because however long it takes to find them, they have no place to hide.
