Praising efficient public transport and highlighting what is possible so that the law of attraction can work.

Main Section

Of late, we see more and more stories of disasters due to global warming and how we (mankind) have been mistreating mother earth. Many times we focus on the negative. However, for those who have read or seen the show “The Secret”, knows about “The Law of Attraction”. That is we should focus on what we want rather that what we don't want.

So I thought I would write this article of some of the things that has been going right. I recently read in our local newspaper on “Super Travel Systems” around the world and I must say I am very impressed. Many countries claim that an efficient public transport is too expensive to maintain, especially when the compare with the cost of maintaining their existing inefficient systems. However, these are countries that have shown what is possible.

Take Portland, Oregon, in United States for example. When all other states are increasing their budget to build more roads etc, they are truly an example to behold. Unlike their other cities, they have shown that even in America where owning a car is like a mark of manhood, it is possible to change with enough political might.

Another one is London; the system is so efficient that nobody thinks about it. They only felt the pain of missing it when the strikes disrupted it. It is true what they say, you don't appreciate what you have until you lose it.

Paris, it is incredible that they have bicycles that are available to use for free (up to 30 minutes (then a nominal charge after that). This is truly amazing, both Eco-friendly and healthy.

In Hong Kong, more than 90% of the trips are made via public transport. This is truly amazing.

Of course, the one voted the best is the most amazing - Curitiba, Brazil. The system is non-subsidized and yet is costs and energy-efficient. All over the world, when we think of public transport, we think of public funded and here you have one that is self-sustaining without public funds. What is more impressive are some of the facts - the wait for the transport is less than one minute and the Curtibanos spend only 10% of their income on transport.

The one in Singapore was not mentioned but I think it is also very efficient from my experience. Here is looking at more efficient public transport everywhere. This would be both good for the environment (with less carbon emission) and our wallet (due to oil prices having to automobile maintenance expenses).
