The most outrageous story of the weekend had to be that of a man, looking for some sort of twisted revenge, running over eight vehicles in a Vermont police station parking lot with a giant tractor. By all accounts, 34 year-old Newport resident Roger Pion flattened not only seven marked police cruisers but also one unmarked personal vehicle, during his bizarre Thursday lunch-time rampage at the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department.
So effective was his campaign of destruction that not only were car roofs and hoods caved in, but radios and radar detectors ruined, as well as trunks containing weapons flattened, every car wrecked so that pursuit of the offender was impossible.
Eye-witness Rene Morris just could not believe the sight of Pion backing the huge tractor over the parked cars, driving over them several times in his destructive outburst before calmly driving back onto the road ans making his escape, though he only got a mile and a half before police stopped and arrested him. It is believed that Pion being recently arrested for marijuana possession and resisting arrest was what drove his angry outburst.
With, thankfully, no injuries, as just prior to the rampage, two car-washing deputes had gone back indoors, the damage coming to somewhere around $250,000 worth, police believe. The wrecked cruisers represent over 50% of the police fleet of in the Canadian border rural county. Luckily, other county sheriff departments are offering cruisers temporarily.
Where Pion actually got hold of the tractor is a mystery, though he is known to come from a farming family, and is currently being held at the Newport-based Northern State Correctional Centre, expected to appear shortly in Orleans County Criminal Court Friday charged with eleven counts of illegal behaviour.
