The culmination of Asia's frist MasterChef edition for the competing Asian countries showcasing 15 contestants.

"Your creativity and determination has wowed all of Asia. We can’t wait to see what you’ll be cooking up next!"
-Masterchef Asia facebook post

A Singaporean has bested an array of Asian nations competitors to be crowned as the first MasterChef Asia. After four months ( 6 weeks of airplay) of intense competition, the lone Singaporean survivor among 15 contestants from Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, India and the Philippines

Woo Wai Leong, 27, beat a field of 14 others in the 15-episode reality television series. He cook away almost literaly a cash prize of US$50,000 (S$70,000) and will have his very own cookbook after beating his room-mate and equally good co-finalist from Malaysia’-Marcus Low.

Woo impressed the judges with his “Chili Crab Pate a Choux Gnocchi”, which fused Asian and Italian cooking styles to present a bold European twist to one of Singapore’s famed dishes. The 3 man chef jury together with guest chef Janice Wong, were blown away by the taste, creativity and presentation of Woo's dessert in celebration of SG50. His sorbet resembled a junk boat, featuring financiers, a type of sponge cake, and meringue shards as the sails of the boat. It was also infused with flavours of the Singapore Sling.

Experienced bar tender

The first round was a mystery box challenge where the couple had to whip up a dish based on randomly selected ingredients. Leong prepared a pan-roasted quail with a chocolate & cauliflower puree brought together with a lavender pan sauce, a challenging and quirky combination to be sure. Leong edged Marcus by 3 points. The second challenge gave the contestants free reign to cook anything they liked which resulted in Leong’s carrot salad roasted in coffee with short ribs and brown-butter puree with mirin-glazed leeks. Again Woo came up with 2points advantage of 5 in 48-43 total. The third and final round had contestants recreate a dish by the top restaurant in San Pelligrino’s list, from Asia's top chef Ganggan who introduced his creation as combination of science and art. It was so delicate that had to an Asian mango lassi cooked in liquid nitrogen. Near perfection, Marcus came on top for the final round.
In the end, Marcus winning rond for this dessert was not enough to catch up with Leong who burried him in the first two rounds. It was still a thrilling finish since Leong mango ball has cracked n the side and any 2points advantage from any judge for Marcus can give Leong trouble. Meaning Marcus 36 points(four 9s) can whallop Leong 5 points advantage had he nailed 30points ( say 8,8,7,7) , at the end of the day it was all about taste. Leong manage to hold on by delivering 33points for a total fo 82 against 79 in the aggregated 3 rounds.

Woo, who is a qualified lawyer and quit his job for his competition is an experienced bartender commented. “Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve felt a deep passion for the kitchen," and added "This competition has been a real life-changing experience and being Asia’s first MasterChef is definitely the proverbial icing on the cake. I am stoked about writing my first cookbook and you would definitely see unique food pairings and fusion of cuisines.”

For the runner up Marcus of Malaysia, he was the resident dessert king and awed judges for some tricks of his own in other menu on the previous weeks but held on the final day winning only his forte dishes-dessert.
