These small, yellow, rubber toy which usually seen enduring a quick journey around the bathtub have unexpectedly revolutionized mankind of the ocean's knowledge.

The "Friendly Floatees"

In 1992, a crate fill with 29,000 package of rubber ducks, frogs, turtles and beavers, fell off from container ship during a journey across the Pacific from Hong Kong and had been left floating on the surface of the sea for years.

For the past 20 years, they have scatter thousands of miles throughout the world. Some are found stuck in the Artic ice near Newfoundland or also known as the location where the infamous Titanic sank, some are washed up on the shores of Alaska and Hawaii, and one are believe to be found on a beach in Scotland.

By using the information of the rubber ducks and the time frame it took for them to wash ashore throughout the world, a small but devoted band of enthusiasts were able to figure the circulatory rate of the ocean and other oceanic information. They have found that it took three years for the ocean water to make full circuit around the world.

It is nicknamed the "Friendly Floatees" by various media who have been following their journey since the ducks began to washed up on the shore in large number, have been immortalised in a book name Moby-Duck. Since then, these rubber ducks has been hailed for revolutionising mankind's knowledge of ocean science. The fate of the rubber ducks also tell us the life span of plastic, as most of them washing up on the shore after 20 years are still in pretty good shape.

Yes this was a fluke but it did help us learn about ocean currents, we are lucky it was only toys not an oil spill.

Great article!
Truly, much of mankind's knowledge is thanks to flukes such as these. Some would say, the hand of G-d guides scientific discoveries...
