The handling of the economy by the United States Federal Government has been a most complete failure.

A Summer Wind long Gone

With all the uneasiness of today, the tension and anxiety of everyday living for so many millions of not just my generation but for most Americans long to just to be able to float away like a summer wind to some enchanted land where benevolence, compassion, and a nurturing of the spirit and body prevail above all else. As a youth those summer winds actually did carry me away to a far distant place where peace and harmony reigned supreme over my world. Oh! how many of us long for all those summer winds of our yesteryears.

In all the news of today there is no summer window to carry us away. There are only storm clouds of uncertainty that convey a foreboding premonition of darkness crowding out the light of hope and prosperity for all mankind. As a youth that light of hope and prosperity was so bright never a thought came of the despair, anguish, and uncertainty that millions like myself face today. A half century latter the world of my youth is no more. Each generation hence has been perplexed by events that have changed their own world. We all have been thrust into a reality completely void of that certainty of those yesteryears.

The facts that surround today's existence for the vast majority of Americans only reinforces that the light of hope and prosperity is fading ever so quickly. The shroud of darkness, so sinister in its approach will soon em blanket us all. When so many face continued financial calamity. where morality, justice, education and liberty in our society have all eroded and where governmental policies only favor the wealthiest few it is no wonder that the light of hope and prosperity is continuing to faded away. Recent statistics now indicate that to be able to just survive with the basic necessities of life today takes an income of over $60,000 per year for a family of four. We are not talking about things like cable or dining out or any of the other things that further impact economic growth but just items like food, transportation, housing, insurance, and taxes. If they have children under the age of 14 we are talking day care. That cost alone exceeds transportation and even housing combined. If their is only a single parent which is most common today day care alone makes it almost impossible to keep pace with the rising cost of everything else. When those employment opportunities are no longer there with those wages to be earned the whole demographics of our society suffers. As what is happening today. When governmental policies that don't or fail to acknowledge the fact that so many millions of Americans are still falling into that abyss of economic devastation our whole society continues to unravel. The current conditions that so many are faced with is becoming so acute that drastic measures must be undertaken now. But the way our political process has evolved has only exasperated the crisis of so many millions.

The Federal government continues to lag behind by 20 or so years when it still contends that the poverty rate are incomes that earn less than $9,000 annually. Today the real poverty rate is at those individuals who are earning less than $30,000 per year. Currently, there has been no real authentic job creation that comes even close to matching an yearly income of $30,000 per year. Contrary to what our elected officials have been touting about recovery from this economic crisis; still there's this deluge of economic uncertainty that continues to grow worse with each passage of legislative budget cuts. With so much slice and dice in budgets all across the country has only spurred more economic devastation on an already weary and steadily growing poorer society.

The continued failure of our elected officials to acknowledge the growing number of those impoverished masses will soon re gate this nation to a point that other nations will now longer look to the United States for inspiration or assistance. The ability of the United States to intervene, help, or maintain any semblance of global stability will only continue to weaken. The erosion in our own society does have a continued adverse affect on every other nation today. Our society is reaching critical mass, sort of speaking. To advert more of a travesty that is unfolding upon our society today drastic reform must take place with our governmental policies. The government must recognize that without substantial job creation with corresponding living wages what ever cuts in local, state, or federal budgets will only further exasperate the deteriorating economic conditions that millions of American are already in.

Today while our legislatures conjure up more proposed cuts that have no barring on the reforms that are necessary to reduce our massive unemployment remain completely oblivious to the issues that really matter for so many millions of Americans. We all have to remember this opening to the Declaration Of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. " When Thomas Jefferson wrote this little did he envision that today our own government is behaving much like the King of Great Britain back in 1776. An almost complete role reversal.

At no other time in our recent history has our own government blatantly ignored the plight of so many Americans. A willful malfeasance of utter contempt for the poor, the destitute and the weak in our society has prevailed for far too long. We the people can no longer sit idle by while our own government squanders what little hope lies in the awakening of so many. As Abraham Lincoln so eloquently put it " A nation divided cannot stand." Today this nation is so divided disproportionately that to continue as we are doing will in fact be the undoing of all the labors of our founding fathers. Will our own government heed the will of the people or will special interest groups, lobbyists, and the wealthy continue to dominate and control the destinies of the multitudes?

Many a nation through-out history has succumbed from the effects of horrific devastating conditions endured by the masses that resulted when government and ruling parties imposed their own will upon their subjects. The same scenario is happening again in not only the United States but in other countries all over the world. The will of the people has been overshadowed by the allure of wealth and power. Overtaken in the process are the basic principals that once made the United States the greatest country in history. A noble experiment in democracy has been lost. Or has it? There is still time to regain our liberties and pursue that allusive sense of true happiness. In order to regain our democratic republic in the fashion that was intended by our founding fathers we the people must act decisively and with true intent that only total unequivocal reform of the laws, policies, and mandates that have done so much harm to our whole society must take president over anything that government continues to do. A unified National Economic Reform Agenda is the best and surest way for this country to climb back out of the abyss of economic depravation that has continued to befallen on the majority of our population. Once out of the abyss perhaps that summer wind will blow gently by, again.
