Quick update on the situation of the latest earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Another major eathquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

Like many New Zealanders I am sitting stunned, watching the news coverage of the latest earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. For those who have already sent messages, thank you. My husband and I are in the North Island and are a long way from this latest disaster.

Although this latest quake is of a lower magnitude than last years one, the damage is far more extensive. Also, this quake happened during the day, so the centre of the city was filled with people. Children were at school throughout the city, and people are in a dazed state, wondering where and how their loved ones are. Fatalities were avoided last time, but this time reports of deaths are already coming in.

After shocks of earthquake

Since last September there have been constant after shocks, leaving the people in fear of something like today’s event happening. Already traumatised by the events of the last four months, this will have broken the spirit of the people of Christchurch completely.

The quake today hit in the middle of the lunch hour causing extensive damage on top of what had already happened. Christchurch is one of the four original English settlements in New Zealand. Many beautiful historic buildings are now either gone or will have to be demolished.

The people of Christchurch, New Zealand

This will be a short report for now. I’ve written it because many people have already read my previous article of last years quake, so obviously the news is in the world arena. Like the Australians who have recently had to cope with so many disasters, New Zealanders are strong. The way ahead for many will look grim at the moment, but the people of Christchurch will cope. Please keep them in your hearts.

So glad you are in a different area & are safe. It is starting to seem as though the earth has a bad case of the flu with indigestion. Will be praying for everyone affected.
