Much about the Australian Open today can be viewed by scanning through the interviews of the top winners this week. From Switzerland’s Stan Wawrika to Slovak Republic’s Dominika Cibulkova to another Swiss native Roger Federer, things are looking bright ahead for the 2015 Australian Open.

What's happening

Wawrinka did not hide his disappointment with his match against Romanian tennis player, Marius Copil. Despite winning, he felt that he could have done it better.

“That was a very tough match. Happy to get through especially in 3 sets from the shuttle wasn’t easy that quite smart ... really fast in the court but he (Marius Copil) was playing great. He was certainly been putting in a lot of pressure. I wasn’t playing my best tennis but I am happy the way I fight today. And the way I did get used to the match.”

While the weather in Melbourne is something not too extreme to be worried about, Wawrinka expressed if ever this affected his game.

“It was the first hot day. I think especially after only 10 days it was quite cold and raining every week so it’s for me it doesn’t change much. Don’t get a big problem when it’s hot like that ... Faster court and the different speed of the court and that’s what makes it a little different”

As for Cibulkova , expectations are quite high after a clear win against Bulgaria’s Tsvetlana Pironkova. She was a finalist last year so everyone is looking forward if she can break her previous record.

“You, know, I don’t want to see to ... I don’t want to see it the way that I want to repeat something, you know. It’s a new year, new challenges ahead of me and I just see a firm grand slam of the year that I’m feeling really good and firmly rested enough for the year to off season, I’m happy to be in the court and, uh, that’s the reason why I’m playing to well. And, you know, my performance today was extremely well and I was just going for my shots and everything right from the first until the last point so this is the way I love to play tennis and I want to keep going.”

What preparations did she get into in anticipation of joining the Australian Open then? The off-season must have given her enough time to prepare.

“Yeah, I know the off-season for me is so always really really hard working in it. And I’m used to going to Florida ... And we have a chance to practice there and it’s a great facility so I just bring all my team there and which is welcome attendance to my fitness. It’s really really tough time doing there.”

Interestingly, her next opponent is someone that has never won a tennis match against her, France’s Alize Cornet. Cibulkova remembers her well.

“Yeah I remember our last match from last year in Miami in two very tough sets and she’s always a tough opponent. She’s a fighter and not easy to play. You know and I just wanna keep my energy inside. I just wanna be focused on my next match to take my good tennis from this ground and you know,.I just try to do my best we’ll see what’s gonna happen.”

If ever there was one player that the Australian Open’s avid spectators are looking forward to, it is Switzerland’s Roger Federer. He’s pretty thankful to be viewed as the early favorite.

Well it’s nice that guys are talking nicely about me and not just bashing me left and right so that I should retire. Well, a lot of that since 2009 I say. So too refreshing, I must say. But clearly I’m also cautious, you know. I know that I am playing good tennis. The last 6 months had been amazing and clearly I want to try keep it up. It’s been an exciting last couple of months, winning in the Davis Cup. Fans of London winning in Brisbane my thousands’ match there. Here I am now playing the first round since it’s such a long way to go ... Very pretty sound-playing, we’ll see how deep it can go because going far is not good enough, I guess. You got to get over this, finish and win it all and that’s tough to do. But I give it a shot.
