Things or events that happened have cause and effect. But there are happenings that can't be explained so they're classified miracles. Readers may have their say on what they think of the following event.

Nun gives birth

On Wednesday, January 15 , a healthy baby boy was born in a hospital in Rieti, Italy to a woman who was having abdominal pains which she mistook for stomach cramps. The woman called his male baby Francis after the present pope. Shockingly, the woman and baby’s mother is a 31-year old nun who claims she was ignorant that she was pregnant.

She helps run a home for the aged

Francis’ mother originally hails from El Salvador. And as a nun, she’s a member of the ‘Little Disciples of Christ’ convent which took care of a home for the aged in Campomoro near the central Italian city of Rieti which is home for 47,700 people.

Mayor's appeal

In the wake of this uncommon event which has rapidly spread, Rieti City Mayor Simone Petrangeli made an appeal to the public and media to give due respect to the woman’s privacy.
Compassion aroused, the public collected clothes and donations and sent to the hospital for aid in mother and son sustenance and expenses.

Unaware of her pregnancy

The nun said she didn’t know she was pregnant. She only felt stomach pain, she told ANSA news agency. Her fellow sisters at the convent were likewise shock upon learning about the unusual pregnancy of one of their members, according to Italian news.
The nun said she’ll take care of the baby herself, according to Pastor Don Fabrizio Borrelio who is convinced that the nun is not telling a lie about being innocent of her pregnancy.

Virgin pregnancy

It is published in the British Medical Journal that out of 200 US women who have given birth, one claim she indeed had given birth, but without the benefit of sexual intercourse
The same source said that 45 of the women who took part in the study, reported at least one virgin pregnancy, ‘unrelated to the use of assisted reproductive technology’.

Consider fallibility

They have conceived without vaginal intercourse or in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The BMJ article stresses that virgin births can occur in non-humans as a consequence of “asexual reproduction, where growth and development of the embryo occurs without fertilization”.
The authors of the study, entitled “Like a virgin (mother)”, warn that researchers need to take into account the possibility of fallible memory on the part of respondents.

UPDATE: Mystery solved

According to Daily Mail, Roxanna Rodriguez, 33, is the nun with the order of the Little Disciples of Jesus, who stunned her mother superior and chiefs of her church after giving birth last week to a baby boy.
There is no indication that her baby's birth is miraculous. Her mother has reported the matter to the head of her order, citing a man from El Salvador as the baby boy's father, but not revealing his name. The mother in the same letter asked apology from all concerned.
A priest at the nearby St Michael’s church in Rieti Father Benedetto Falcetti was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying, “It all happened last spring, around March or April time when she was back in El Salvador to get her passport renewed. She has not said who the father is, but I understand he is, shall we say, an old flame of hers from when she was younger. At some stage, I expect she will tell the father that he has a son.”
Roxanna only took her vows in September. An unidentified sister from the convent said: “What she has done is not right at all. She has betrayed her vows. She will not be coming back here.” — AFP

That was indeed a surprise of surprise. Virgin pregnancy.. But what is more intriguing is the fact that this is happening elsewhere too. How can one explain this?

This was interesting. Just because one claims something to be true does not make it so. I believe that in the case of this nun she just did not want to tell the truth of what happened because she did not want to leave the order she was residing in.

Well, if indeed she was "with" a man in March or April, but did not receive Holy Orders (take vows to be a nun) until September, then her pregnancy as a nun is Virginal (as a Catholic, she confessed her sins in secret and was made new) and does not break any vows. Unorthodox? Certainly. But not a criminal act.
But we know more about science now -- as to actual pregnancies without intercourse. People can be born intersex, with both male and female hormones and an ability to self-replicate, though I had thought it was more common for intersex people to be sterile, needing hormone replacement therapy in order to conceive. Times are changing. The convenience foods we ingest are full of hormones. Why wouldn't we expect some strange results?

MADAN, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment.
SAVIO, the concluding part of this article tells it all. No mystery, no virgin birth.
CAROLFORD, thanks for your reaction. We can only guess her reasons why she told a lie. Her mother and the priest provided the truth as stated in the last part of this article.
CNWRITER, thanks for your comment.
