Cecil, a rare black maned lion who had been a popular fixture at the Hwange National Park, was found beheaded and skinned recently. Bait was used to lure the lion out away from the protective area of the park.

Recently in the news

It has been in the news the last few days that a Minnesota dentist had paid $50,000 for a permit to hunt in the area earlier this month. Initiially wounded by the dentists bow and arrow they continued to hunt down the animal for another 40 hours finishing the beloved lion off with a gun shot.

Cecil was a 13 year old lion collared for a study going on in the area. He had been in the park for over a decade and was well known there.

Walter James Palmer is the name of the Minnesota dentist who is now saying he didn't know that the hunt was illegal and that he had trusted his guides and felt he had acquired all necessary permits. He has temporarily closed his office due to death threats and criticism received on social media. He has had to close down the River Bluff Dental website and Facebook account due to the situation.

According to the Professional Hunters Association eleven African countries issue lion hunting permits. South Africa's is the largest bringing in $675 million. There are 15,000 Americans going on hunting safaris each year.

Most recently Walter Palmer wrote a letter of apology to his patients on Tuesday. He says he did not know that this lion was the well known lion of the area and wasn't made aware until after the hunt was over. He is in hopes that things will get back to normal soon.

However, authorities in Zimbabwe have located the two men who helped Palmer and they will appear in court on possible poaching charges. The authorities are actively pursuing Walter Palmer in this case as well. A "We the People" petition has been posted on the White House's official website which has nearly 70,000 signatures already. They are hoping to urge the Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Secretary of State John Kerry to cooperate and to extradite Palmer back to Zimbabwe to stand trial for this atrocity .
