Plagued by injuries and on the brink of elimination, the Bulls are not giving up hope.

Chicago Bulls Struggles to Keep Season Alive

This season has been particularly painful to the Bulls. Both literally and figuratively. Nobody ever imagined them to be down 3-1 this early into the playoff and to the eight seed 76ers. They closed the season with the top seed at 50-16. Somehow, their role players showed that they can manage to win regular season matches even with Derrick Rose sitting 27 of those games due to injury. Once Rose became fit to play, they looked like the team to beat, threatening to embarrass Lebron James and the Miami Heat for what seemed like a sure match at the Eastern Conference Finals. They were so cohesive. So tough defensively. So promising.

And then the injury happened to Rose in what many would blame to a coach’s inability to rest superstars when they own a big lead. Game 1 was a pyrrhic victory. Everyone knows that but the Bulls refuse to admit that the season is over, and for good reason. They still have great role players. But role players did not prove enough in game 2, as an invigorated 76ers abused their defense for a 17-point win. And then Noah, got injured in Game 3. This time, a key player in the defense and rebounding department can only cheer for teammates at the sidelines. Game 4 was no different, a bitter loss and the Bulls may probably be thinking how injuries could destroy all you have been working for the whole season.

How long and why should they keep fighting when they know they are not the same team that racked up all those wins? Coach Thibodeau has a challenge for his guys. A really personal one. ‘This is a situation where mental toughness comes into play’, he said. How tough are they? We will see that tonight, May 8, 9:30 pm ET.
