2014 Midterm Elections

The Republicans have replaced the Democrats as the strongest power in the upper house of the US Congress. This will make the governance of President Obama very difficult.

In the US, congressional Republicans have taken over the majority in the Senate. By winning the Senate seat in Iowa, the Republicans would have skipped the mark of 51 seats needed for a majority in the upper house of the US Congress. In addition, they could expand according to projections their majority in the House continue with the vote on Tuesday. This means that Republicans will control both chambers of parliament.

For President Barack Obama, governance would be therefore, even more difficult than before. Own initiatives he cannot prevail against the resistance of the Republicans. The Conservatives could pass legislation - Obama would veto as a last resort only. However, Obama would not be the first president without a majority. The search for compromise in such a situation belongs to the political tradition of the United States.

Faced with the threat blockade invited President Barack Obama, the leaders of both parties and chambers for Friday for a meeting, as the White House announced on Tuesday evening. In the conversation, he may attempt to set the course for the remainder of his term of office until January 2017 and to explore possible compromises.

Republicans take control of senate

In Louisiana, the Republicans have a good chance of the Democrats lose a mandate for a runoff election on 6 December. In Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, West Virginia and South Dakota, the Democrats lost their Senate seats already to the Republicans.

The Democrats from President Barack Obama had in 2010 lost their majority in the House. Since then, the opposition Republicans could block almost all key legislation by the Obama administration. After their victory, the Republicans continue to ask the Chairman of the House of Representatives. It currently holds this position John Boehner.

The Congress election campaign was the most expensive of all time. According to calculations by the independent "Center for Responsive Politics' cost of the election campaign of all candidates a total of approximately $ 3.67 billion.

In addition to the 36 senators and 435 deputies to the Congress and 38 governors and mayors were elected in 172 cities. Moreover, there is in many state's referendums, for example, via a legalization of pot, about Fracking to tax sugary drinks.
