Crisis in Attawapiskat

There is a housing shortage and an emergency crisis going on in the northern Ontario reserve of Attawapiskat. There are people living in tents, with no heat source, as well as 'sheds". Many of the houses are condemned. There can be many reasons for the housing shortage.

It can be because the band is underfunded, in terms of housing for their community and other programs. The school is sitting on a contaminated site, and they have the students in trailers - the school that was promised to them by the government never happened.

Little resources in the area - the community is isolated and its difficult to get supplies into the fly-in community. Also, with the mild winter they are experiencing, from what I saw on the news from a local resident, it is going to delay the building of the ice roads for winter. The ice roads will only be ready in January or February, and we're only at the beginning of December. It is already reaching -30 or so temperatures up there.

The Red Cross has brought in supplies, such as sleeping bags and warm blankets. The federal government is bringing in 22 modular homes to accommodate the residents for their housing needs. It will take a few weeks for the homes to arrive.

This housing crisis is not from yesterday or last week. No one in Canada should be living like this. We are in a 21st century world, and Canada is one of the richest countries on the planet, with vast resources, many under Aboriginal lands.

When will the government own up to its fiduciary responsibilities to First Nations and their governments?

The federal government claims they gave $90 million dollars to Attawapiskat over the past 6 years. When in reality, it equals $10,000 per person and not the $50,000 that the federal government claim has gone out to the community members.

The federal government's solution is to put the community under third-party management. According to Charlie Angus, NDP Member of Parliament, all this person will do and focus on is clearing any debt, which isn't high at all in Attawapiskat. He's not there to determine housing needs - just to eliminate any debt.

Chief Spence has stated in a Press Release dated Dec. 11th, that she has not agreed to the community being under Third-Party management. This paternalistic way of dealing with First Nations is not the way to deal with this crisis. Chief Spence has also stated that the band has submitted all annual audit reports to Indian Affairs and they have been approved by the Department.

Hello savannahbree10,

Warm welcome to Wikinut.

I think the people living in tents need to be helped by the Government or some charities.

The entire world have some Attawapiscat situations. Also here in mineral rich South Africa not withstanding. I truly believe that the suffering communities must become self reliant as fast as they possibly can. Hunting, fishing gathering etc.Our local poor communities are pooling their skills and what little resources they have delivering to the community by the community. No longer prepared to wait for empty promises.
