Cut Aid to All that Attack Us

My opinion on what our reaction as a nation should be, to countries where American embassies are attacked.

The Issue

On the anniversary of the worst terror attacks ever to hit America, another tragedy unfolded on American soil overseas. Ambassador Chris Stevens, two United States Marines, and at least one more person were killed Tuesday in an attack on the United States’ embassy in Libya. An unconfirmed number of people were wounded.
This comes after what’s been called an Arab Spring in which secular government have been over thrown and replaced democratically with Islamist groups in both Libya and Egypt (where another embassy was attacked, but there were no deaths). While the governments of both countries have not expressed anti-American sentiment; it is well documented that followers of these groups and other organizations tied to them do have that sentiment.
The vast majority of people in these regions are against this minority of people that want nothing less than the globalization of Islam and to fight what they see as an evil western presence. They do not deserve to be punished for the actions of others, but the actions displayed by this group of people simply goes to show that sometimes, people do get hurt over things they had nothing to do with. Ambassador Stevens and the other hurt or killed in this conflict did not make the film that was being protested, but even if they had been involved they didn’t deserve to be killed over it.

A Solution

I am a very big supporter of providing aid to our allies. However something must be done. The actions against our fellow countrymen and our embassies are unacceptable. We can ill afford another war at this point in time, especially against a fledgling democracy in the Middle East. It would create all the support that the anti-American jihadist groups need to gain even more momentum and win the people of the area to their “causes”. When it comes to military action, Iran is a much larger threat and analysts have recently reported that war with them would cost more than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. The only reasonable option left is to cut aid in its entirety to all countries where our embassies were attacked.
Cutting aid may cause harm to some that weren’t involved. They should feel fortunate however because there are many Americans that would prefer carpet bombing and it’s not our obligation to provide aid in the first place. We must take a strong stance on these matters and if that means some people have to suffer the consequences of others action, well that’s a pain we know as well.

I feel US should get wider cooperation and commitment from others under the auspices of UN. The other major powers mainly China, Russia and Europe should be more alingned with any action. Gaddafi was not really a threat as also Mubarak. The consequences of actions of US seems more anarchy and fanaticism - siva
