To add to the 'Planet of the Apes' franchise, 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' is expected in theaters in 2014. Matt Reeves will helm the project.

Plot and Casting for 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Director Matt Reeves is at the helm of a third film in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” takes up the story where “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” left off in 2011.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” keeps going with the heavier sci-fi side of “Rise.” “Dawn” picks up 15 years after “Rise,” to find a lab-made virus that is ravaging humanity.

Variety claims Keri Russell has joined the cast members as a human female lead. She will probably be one of the survivors left in San Francisco who band together after the devastation. Russell and director Reeves will have a reunion, after his co-creation of her TV series “Felicity.”

Russell continues to climb the ladder of success as an actress. Her roles in the sci-fi horror movie, “Dark Skies and the FX TV drama, “The Americans,” has given her a few rungs as a boost up in her climb.

Andy Serkis will be reprising his role as the ape leader, Caesar. Caesar does no longer have to deal with his father, as James Franco won’t be playing a large role, if any. As the leader of the group, he must retain the control over the revolutionary apes.

Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Kodi-Smit McPhee will co-star. The roles chosen for the cast are being kept under wraps at this time.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” The duo also wrote the first script for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” although Mark Bomback of “Live Free or Die Hard and The Wolverine” fame later revised it.

Watch for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in theaters on May 23, 2014.
