Dear Dallas Mavericks, I Barely Knew Thee

I've never been a huge fan of professional basketball, but over the course of the past week and a half, I've become a fan of the Dallas Mavericks.

When the year began, the only thing I knew about Dallas was A) It's in Texas, and B) I don't like the Dallas Cowboys. However, over the course of the past couple of weeks, I have been introduced to a very tall German man named Dirk Nowitzki, and a charming bunch of Dallas Mavericks.

At the beginning of the 2011 NBA playoffs, I felt like I knew what the overall answer would be. The Miami Heat. The Big 3. Bron Bron and D-Wayde and poor 'ol Chris Bosh who can't get his own nickname. I'm only a casual observer of the sport, but all year long these were the only names you heard. Every once in a while Carmello Anthony would pop his head in for some news that didn't matter. Derek Rose was pretty impressive, so he'd squeeze in next to King James from time to time. And those stupid, stupid commercials. "What should I do?" Shut up, for starters.

Then, through the series of the NBA playoffs, I began hearing these strange names that I hadn't heard since '06. Dirk Nowitzki? Jason Kidd? Jason Terry? They're still playing? First, they beat Portland, and we all yawn a little. Then, they obliterate the Lakers. The only person Kobe Bryant peed on that day was himself.

After that series, the Mavs never stopped. Oklahoma City was able to get one over on them, but then came the 2011 NBA Finals, the final series. Miami was there, as everyone had guessed. LeBron James was itching for the trophy. He had forsaken his home team, been accused of using poor ethics, all for this moment. And he f'ed up in the worst possible way.

I won't be unfair and put all the blame on him. Only about 80%. I get that your lady friend cheated on you and you were in a sensitive place and all that, but you sucked man. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are pulling amazing fourth quarter turnarounds, Jason Kidd is playing like he's 26, Dirk is just making everyone look dumb. And Jason Terry? Yeah, he was there. All day.

The last nail in the coffin came June 12th, 2011. Game 6, in Miami. The Heat just never got it together. The final score was a dominating 105-95 Dallas victory. There was never a point that they had to come from behind. They just dominated the entire game.

Nowitzki didn't even play that well for the first half, but the rest of his team remembered losing to the Heat in 2006. They weren't going to let it happen again. With only about 2:25 left in the fourth, Nowitzki hit a long jumper that sent Miami Heat fans to the doors. Before the Mavericks were even dressed in their '2011 NBA Finals Champions' gear, Bron Bron had already made it to the parking lot. Congratulations and hats off to the Dallas Mavericks, who for the first time in franchise history are NBA champions.
