Ten years ago today, Kobe Bryant scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors, the second-most in one game in NBA history.

Kobe's Historic Night

Ten years ago today, on January 22, 2006, LA Lakers great Kobe Bryant had one of the most epic moments of his legendary NBA career. He scored a career-high 81 points on that Sunday night against the Toronto Raptors points in a 122–104 victory. It was a feat that haven’t been done in over four decades. Kobe Bryant’s performance became the second most points scored in a single game in league history, second only to the late great Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game in 1962. Unlike Wilt Chamberlain who was fed repeatedly by teammates for inside shots in a blowout win, Kobe Bryant created his own shots from the outside in a game, which the LA Lakers trailed at halftime by 14 and did not pull away until the fourth quarter. Spectators at the Staples Center were in awe because they knew they just witnessed history.

The news of Kobe’s historic 81 points explosion was the talk of the sports world. All the shots he made particularly in the second half were the highlights on most sports network. Sportscasters and anchors could not believe Kobe Bryant scored that many points in a NBA game. He went 28 of 46 from the field, made 7 of 13 shots were the three-point line, and hit 18 of 20 shots from the free throw line. He scored 55 points in the second half, which was incredible!

Kobe hopes his historic performance inspires today's NBA players

Kobe Bryant is playing in his final season in the NBA and has been recently voted as a starter in the upcoming 2016 NBA All-Star Game. Kobe remembers fondly that epic game on January 22, 2006, and the passing of 10 years adding a warm glow to him.

"I've had to play it over in my mind several times and there's really no explanation for it," he said. "I can always explain it from an Xs-and-O's standpoint, from a training standpoint, but when nights like that happen, there's something mystical about it.

"Personally, for the next generation of players, believe anything is possible. You don't ever want to place a ceiling on a performance in what you can and can't do. You just go out there and play and dream."
