Have the Eyes of the USA Opened ?

After the murder of Burhanuddin Rabbani, the USA has realized that Pakistan is the infant terrible.

The ISI and the Haqqani faction

In the early fifties Pakistan joined the American led pacts against the Soviet Union. Thus it became part of CENTO( Baghdad Pact), SEATO etc. The Americans were fooled that Pakistan was genuinely about Communism. In fact it armed itself to battle against India, which it considered its arch enemy. It fought 4 wars with India and was bested in each of them as well losing half of its territory( Bangla desh).
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan gave Pakistan another ploy to gain the confidence of uncle Sam. The CIA began to use Pakistan as a front line state to arm organizations like al Qaeda, Taliban and other extremist Muslim groups. The battle was against the Soviet army, but in real terms the Pakistan hard liners had another agenda. They wished to set up an Islamic caliphate across the middle East and Southern Asia. This the USA never realized and continued on its way of arming the Muslim extremists.
The defeat of the Soviet Union gave great relief to the USA, but unknown to it, they had nurtured a hydra. The extremist Muslim groups bared their claws as the realization dawned on the USA, that it was itself the Target.
These extremist groups felt that a defeat of the Great Satan, the USA was essential for their success. Hence 9/11 took place and the USA was targeted. The USA started a war against terror, but unknown to it it had a enemy in its ranks. This was the ISI ( inter Services intelligence) a Pakistan organization. This organization maintained links with extremist organizations like the al Qaeda and the Haqqani faction of the Taliban. The fact that the ISI could keep Osama Bin Laden hidden, just 60 miles from the Pakistan Capital is proof of this.
The USA was making no headway in the war on terror and the chiefs of staff of the US army were bewildered. They however tracked Osama and shot him dead and that is when the USA realized that it was fighting a war in Afghanistan with one arm tied behind its back. The epicenter of terror was Pakistan.
At that time this must have shocked the politico-military establishment of the USA, that their trusted ally was actually in cahoots with the enemy itself. The USA began to shift gears and further evidence piled up against Pakistan. Now it is known that the ISI supported Haqqani faction of the Taliban, is involved in assassination and killings of prominent leaders of the Afghan government. The idea is to create a vacuum in the leadership, which the Taliban can exploit and take over Afghanistan
The hard truth is now out and it must have been a bitter pill for the USA to swallow. Their Chief of Staff of the US Armed Forces, Mike Mullen has now branded Pakistan's ISI has a conduit for arms and funds for the Taliban and has promised swift retribution. The honeymoon of 5 decades with Pakistan has ended.
The sad part is that India and Russia had been warning the USA all along, but the USA had blinkers and could see no wrong in Pakistan. The fat is now in the fire and the USA will have to act. Failure to do so now , will condemn it to another defeat like in Vietnam, the only difference being that this would be a self inflicted defeat.

Many, many of us knew that Pakistan was acting against U. S. interests for a very long time, but 'official' Washington kept its head in the sand for just as long. You hit the nail on the head with this one Madan.

The USA has a very good track record of backing the wrong horses and popping up tin pot dictators in different parts of the world. However, it's politics and not my cup of tea.
