Independence Day

Tomorrow, the United States celebrates Independence Day, the Fourth of July. I suspect that the true meaning of July 4, 1776 is lost to most Americans and most of the World. It is of no small consequence that our Declaration of Independence has become a statement shadowed with the darkness of hypocrisy. Here is an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.
The first sentence speaks of all men being created equal, which can now be translated to “all people” without much controversy. However, the United States government does not abide by these principles now or throughout our short history. We hold these truths to be self-evident, yes the majority of American citizens do believe in equality but we do not demand it as a whole people. There are many groups who take up this challenge everyday for a particular purpose—to them, I humbly bow and give my thanks.
We created our government to secure these rights of equal treatment but our government regularly makes choices and decisions and laws that corrupt equality and damage life. According to the Declaration of Independence, the government derives their powers from the consent of the governed. Most people know or they should know, that the United States government derives their power through the actions of special interest groups, which are mainly made up of large corporations who value profit over people, over the environment, over life. If we cannot recognize our own equality, within our own Country, how can we recognize the equality of our brothers and sisters in other Countries? We have been sold a dream that is based upon an illusion that if we work hard enough (feed the machine of our current government and its benefactors, large corporations) that we will find the happiness we pursue. Wake up America, the very illusion of the dream perpetuates inequality.
What can we do? Read the Declaration of Independence, especially this sentence, “That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.” The safety being spoken of is not safety from outside groups but safety from the government, safety from inequality, safety from lies, safety from unjust laws, safety to pursue happiness. So, tomorrow as you set off or watch fireworks that cast a cloud of smoke into our atmosphere and choke our fowl remember what you are really celebrating no longer reflects reality. Support those who protest for change. Support those who seek equality. Support those who protest against laws and policies that harm life, life here and life abroad. At the very least, you can support petitions that seek change that is close to your heart. In the future, I look forward to celebrating a true Independence Day when equality is not something we have to pursue but something that is accepted and understood from birth.
