The Indian team must justify that it is the best team in the world by winning abroad. This is not happenning.

India and its title as the World Champions in Test Cricket

The ICC has introduced a ranking system for test cricket. As a follow up the Indian team is tagged as the best in the world. This ranking is arrived after a points system devised by the ICC was effected. India heads the table with the maximum number of points and claims credit as the best team in the world. This is fine, but a deeper analysis will show that the title best team may perhaps not fit India.

A look back to the history of cricket can throw some light. The great Australian team of Don Bradman and later the West Indies under Clive Lloyd invite comparison with the present Indian team. Bradmans team won all their series at both home in Australia and abroad in a decisive manner. Similarly Clive LLoyd and his team also won decisively at all venues it played, at both home and abroad.Their battery of pace bowlers made mincemeat of the opposition. In particular the fast bowlers never allowed the tail to wag and the West Indies were victors in a Test from the word 'go'.

In contrast the recent Indian teams tour of South Africa is a bit of a disappointment. The series is only drawn and not won and the hard truth remains that India has never won a series in South Africa for the last 17 years.Surely drawing a series is not a sign of being a world champion team. Some glaring instances also come mind. The batting failed twice on fast and swinging conditions and the Indian bowlers failed to demolish the South African tail enders. Again requiring 340 to win on the last day, the Indians made no attempt to go for the target and started playing for a draw from the word go. One can't think of a team with the Don and Viv Richards adopting such tactics
Thus one needs to be realistic. certainly the Indian team is good but not comparable with the great teams of the world. The points system
is fine, but in real terms a match winner must win. That has not happened. However we need not feel disheartened and with a glass of rum and coke, we can still feel happy that this Indian team is at least not a good loser like the earlier Indian teams.
