Indian airports have nothing to speak about. They are performing miserably, adding to the passengers’ woes. The infrastructure is poor and even new terminals are cracking particularly at the Chennai airport. AAI is not discharging its duty properly. The authorities do not know how to handle even pigeons and honey bees.

Privatisation Starts at Chennai Airport

Privatisation Starts at Chennai Airport

15 airports in India are to be privatised. Chennai Airport has begun privatisation. The steps are being taken for development, operation and maintenance. A new international terminal has opened this month from the airport. For the existing one, renovation is being planned. There is a cargo backlog at the Chennai Airport. More than 2000 documents are pending for clearance because of a protest by Custom officers. The airport is also developing a new website. The airport does not have even the basic Wi-Fi facilities. Recently a homemade bomb was set off in Beijing Airport. Luckily there is no such thing that took place in Chennai Airport even though safety factors are far from satisfactory here. In fact, DGCA wants to initiate a new study on airports runway safety.

Software Is Confusing

The new software installed in the Chennai Airport is confusing even the staff. Maintenance has been affected and contractors have not been paid. MERS Coronavirus has been causing fear and anxiety in the Indian Airports. From Saudi Arabia, the disease has spread to places like UK, France and Italy through airports but luckily India has been spared for the time being.

Bond Issue for Rs.1000 Crore

AAI has come out with a bond issue for Rs.1000 crore for modernising small airports in towns and cities in India. AAI is planning to improve facilities in 15 airports and to promote 51 airports over a period of time. The entry of Air Asia into India with tie-up with Tata augurs well for the development of smaller airports. But the problem is that the AAI wants to develop bulk of the airports in the Western and Central India but Air Asia is focusing on South India. There is a clear mismatch here that needs to be sorted out.

Visitors’ Ban in Chennai Airport

There is going to be a visitors’ ban in Chennai Airport which will make AAI lose 5 million rupees every month. Traffic signal near Chennai Airport was on the blink for a month in June this year. At the new international terminal here, passengers will not have any facility to enjoy food provided by multinational retail chains. This is due to a bungling by AAI. Airport employees have gone on mass leave opposing privatisation at the Chennai Airport. This caused a partial emergency at the airport. Flights were planned to be rescheduled for the runway repair. After heavy rain, water seeped into the airport terminal. Entire Chennai Airport is to be brought under CCTV surveillance soon. After the kidnap of the UK couple, airport authorities are watchful. Recently some flyers were attacked by bees at the new terminal of the airport. The authorities do not know how to handle the bees. The new domestic terminal is leaking whenever it rains. False ceiling is hanging loosely at the airport. Earlier about twenty false ceiling panels collapsed in the departure hall of the new terminal.

Machine Will Scan 1800 Bags per Hour

GVK CSIA has bagged the advertisement rights in Terminal 2 at the Mumbai Airport. Hereafter Indian goods will also be duty-free in the Indian airports. A German-made inline baggage machine is to be installed in the international terminal of Chennai airport. The machine will be able to scan around 1800 bags per hour. All kinds of suspicious baggage can be handled efficiently by the machine at a four level system. The government of India is for setting up an airport at Sriperumpudur at a cost of Rs.20000 crore. There was an announcement sometime back that global bids to manage Kolkata and Chennai airports would be made soon but nothing came after the announcement.

How to Handle Pigeons?

Security was breached recently at the Srinagar airport. J&K police blamed air force personnel for the incident. At the Chennai airport, authorities have added the number of battery-operated golf carts for the benefit of the passengers. But at the same time, crucial amenities for the passengers were dropped by the AAI in the new international terminal. The cost also soared by Rs.1000 crore. Pigeons add to the woes of the airport. They are resting on the metal trusses. There are bird droppings in the new international terminal. The authorities do not know how to deal with the pigeons. Problems continue to plague secondary runway here.

Parking Charges without Parking

Cars are forced to take a circuitous route for exit and take more than the permitted seven minutes. As a result, they are forced to cough up parking charges even though they have not parked their cars at the airport. The Kolkata airport is both imposing and swanky. Two flights landed on an unfit runway in Nagpur airport in Maharashtra. Airport ramp in Chennai is still a worry as accidents take place regularly. Baggage handling has proved to be risky here.

Highest Airport in the World

The highest airport in the world is being built by China near Tibet. Daocheng Yading Airport under construction in Sichuan Province in China will be 4411 metre high. The airport near Sabarimala in Kerala is in trouble as the construction has been stayed by the National Green Tribunal. Dubai airport is the second busiest airport in the world. London’s Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the world. For Mumbai’s private jets, Ahmedabad is the parking bay. Mumbai is the financial capital of India. At the Ranchi airport, parking has been made free of cost during night. AAI is planning a joint venture with the oil companies to meet the aviation turbine fuel requirements of airlines.

Passengers’ Dreams Were Shattered

Recently fire broke out at the 3rd floor of Air Traffic Control complex at the Chennai airport. Recently Puducherry airport terminal has been opened. There are short runway limits at this airport. The airport can handle only fifty two fliers at a time. A portion of the under-construction bridge in close proximity to the arrival area of the international airport in Mumbai collapsed, killing three and injuring seven. When so many irregularities are taking place at the Chennai airport, passengers are angry at the levying of user-development fees at the airport. AAI promised that the new airport terminals would be a visual treat. Passengers were expecting expansive glass curtain walls, a vertical garden, transparent tube to give the passengers a dream experience and many more things. But now the passengers are really afraid even to enter the new terminals. Rs.1800 crore projects at Kolkata airport was completed by a joint venture of ITD Cementation India. There are Italian connections to this company.

Full Body Scans Retreat

Full body scanners were promised to be removed from the airports in USA due to privacy concern. I don’t know whether all of them have been removed. Earlier these scanners scanned the entire human body and exposed the passengers in naked in the control room screen. Ladies particularly felt offended by this act. Luckily there are no such issues in Indian airports. In USA, airport constructions are fast and focused. But even after a year of extending, the secondary runway at Chennai airport has not taken off yet. In Hyderabad airport, six aircrafts and the Chief Minister’s helicopter were destroyed in a fire accident. A boy was drowned inside the Chennai airport complex in a sump.
