"Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor," - Sholom Aleichem

Hong Kong's Poor

"Content makes poor men rich; discontent makes rich men poor,"- Benjamin Franklin. This is a story that depicts the disparities among Hong Kong's wealthiest and their poorest citizens. Kelvin Chan's report affirms that Hong Kong is among Asia's richest cities, and a typical home for the rich is a mansion accompanied by a picturesque view. In contrast, home for the poor is a metal cage. Can you imagine residing in a cage that is nothing more than an over-sized mock up of an animal cage? Apparently, this is not an uncommon site among some working-class neighborhoods. Moreover, in some instances people are wounded by critters because there is no way to prohibit them from penetrating the cages. According to estimates, approximately one hundred thousand people in the former British colony live in substandard housing. The classification encompasses apartments subdivided into cubicles. These draconian living conditions are products of surging housing prices.

Broken Promises

According to reports, the leader of the country campaigned to produce more affordable housing. Since the housing market bottomed out in 2008, prices have doubled thus relegating people to live like animals in captivity. Needless to say, these corrosive conditions are fueling anti-government sentiment. Did you know that the government controls all land for future development? Also, other factors like easy credit spawned by super-low interest rates, and foreign investments have attributed to the crisis. People who are entrusted to dwell in cages hold out little hope for improvement. It is obvious that their politicians are just as adept at lying as ours. What about the availability of public housing? The waiting list for public housing exceeds two hundred thousand. As an American, our problems pale in comparison to the challenges the middle class must endure there. Finally, the next time you decide to throw a pity party - think about the plight of these people.
