Recently, there were issues regarding use and ban of noodles marketed by a certain brand in India.Most parts of the Nation have also claimed the health hazards related to the fast food and many have stopped purchasing the favorite dish of most kids now.
What are the health issues actually related to this food and where else has this element been detected to be unsafe ...lets take a look.(Updated on 18th june 2015 see last section )

The 2-minute risk

There is fear that the food we are buying from the well known stores might be unfit for consumption, as recently there were many issues regarding the adulteration of food samples of the most favorite dish and easily prepared food "Maggi Noodles".
Its said that, One-fifth of the food samples are adulterated due to the use of high amount of LEAD in the food along with MSG.
This occurred as a result of the violation of safety standard norms by the largest sample of food items .
Still there is lack of information...
There is no information on food samples tested, there is no information if there were any measures taken against the companies which sold the product, or if there were any preventive measures taken if the food samples were found adulterated.

Uses Of LEAD and a little about MSG

We all know LEAD as one of the ELEMENTS OF PERIODIC TABLE and other details are : Element Lead (Pb), Group 14, Atomic Number 82, p-block, Mass 207.2

Its uses are :

Battery : The Lead-Acid storage battery in which grid or plate is made of Lead
Rolled Extrusions : resistance to chemical corrosion, high density
Pigments :In paints (though this has also been banned, about which we'll discuss)
Cable Sheathing : high ductility, good extrusion ability, relatively low temperature
Ammunition : In sports shooting small arms

No where has it been used as ingredient in foods or consumed by any one as a healthy or tasty food.

MSG stimulates the nervous system and makes food appear tastier. It is widely used in “Indian Chinese” food. The US FDA says MSG is “generally recognized as safe”, the same as salt, pepper, vinegar and baking powder.
Glutamate is present in many natural foods including tomato, mushroom,fungi and cheese.

How has LEAD become an ingredient

Now the question arises, why and how has lead been used in Nestle's Maggi Noodles and whether MSG is allowed in the Noodles.
The lead, according to scientists, may come from the raw materials — water or flavoring material — or packaging, or the curling agent.
“Lead is not an essential component of noodles."

MSG is permitted only in the seasoning used for noodles or pastas and the permitted level of lead is 2.5 ppm according to FSS rules.
“Even if a product is satisfying MSG limits, and one is consuming it in large quantities or very frequently, it may be harmful,

How far its harmful

Samples collected in various parts of the country were found containing added mono sodium glutamate (MSG) and lead in excess of the permissible limit.

Lead poisoning is a cumulative toxic agent , particularly harmful to young children and can affect multiple body systems, In growing children, it causes low IQ, hyperactivity, attention deficit, learning disabilities and anemia.

Where else is use of Lead banned

Use of high amount of lead has been prohibited in pigments or paints.
At high levels of exposure, lead damages the brain and central nervous system and
can lead to coma, convulsions and even death.
Signs and symptoms of lead poisoning usually don't appear until dangerous
amounts have accumulated.

Lead poisoning cases in young children are high as they tend to lick or eat lead-containing paint when it peels off the walls or while playing with toys.
Lead from a mother's blood can pass to the fetus during pregnancy, possibly giving rise to genetic disorders.
Exposure of pregnant women to high levels of lead can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and low birth weight, as well as minor malformations.
Women with high blood lead levels develop early osteoporosis, lower backache, joint pain and persistent anemia

Creating Awareness

The use of these noodles is still continued though temporarily in some parts of the nation, but its our responsibility to be aware of the harmful effects of such foods and stay away from consuming them.

Where do we lack ?
We are unaware of the ingredients or the effects caused by them.
We hardly find people looking for the manufactured date and time for the expiry of the products consumed.
Most of us don't know the terms like MSG and we hardly think about the permissible levels of such taste enhancers unless we come to know about them through the media or some other medium.
We need to be careful regarding INSTANT foods which are preferred for time taken for cooking.
Lets be responsible and have a healthy living .

Incinerating Maggi stocks

A cement factory in Karnataka has decided to generate energy by burning the banned Maggi stocks so that they don't go waste.
Alas ! Maggi is all set to generate energy , though in some other way.
The officials of the factory have plans to burn the stocks in an Eco-friendly manner by crushing and reducing the powder before destroying it in an environmentally acceptable way in the kilns of the cement plant to convert into ALTERNATIVE FUEL RESOURCES (AFR).
The noodle packs are loaded into the feeder platforms of the skeeter crushers after unwrapping them, they are crushed into small granules and fed into CLINKER boiler and then incinerated.
The whole process takes about 10 to 12 days !

There were same allegations against Indomie noodles about 10 years ago, since then i have used instant noodles sparingly.

Well, instant foods are known for being more chemically inclined. important note about lead content
