Massive Releases of Oil and Fracking Chemicals as a Result of Colorado Flooding

It is a dire enough situation in Colorado with scores of collapsed bridges, roads made impassable, homes and cars washed away, but now we hear of an even greater threat to the health and safety of the state's inhabitants.

The flooding is producing a toxic chemical soup

The media, in reporting the news from Colorado, is understandably focused on the human toll - people stranded, homes and automobiles destroyed, collapsed roadways and bridges, and gigantic mudslides - but it has not brought attention to the environmental disaster that is now plaguing the state. In fact, there seems to be a media blackout on reporting that oil and fracking chemicals have mixed with the flood waters to produce a dangerous toxic soup. The flooding is wreaking havoc upon Colorado's oil and gas infrastructure as overflowing rivers and streams inundate and submerge drilling rigs and chemical storage facilities.

A monumental disaster

The Grist's John Upton is one reporter who is on top of this story, writing "Fracking infrastructure has been inundated and its toxic chemicals have spilled out. Tanks that store chemicals and polluted water are being overwhelmed and are toppling over. Oil and gas wells are flooding."

Fracking wells dot the landscape over much of Colorado, and a great many drilling operations occur within designated floodplains. Moreover, the industry has no way of preventing these disasters from occurring. Unfortunately, no one outside the fossil fuel industry knows what toxic chemicals are mixing with the flood waters, since the energy companies are protected by law from having to disclose the the names of the scores of chemicals they use in the fracking process.

As Upton writes, "Might the fracking industry have worsened Colorado's floods by contributing to climate change, then spilled its toxic chemicals into those flood waters? That would be a cruel double punch."

Our Mother is speaking to us

In the opinion of this observer, the mega-events we have witnessed in recent years - Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, enormous wild fires, and now these floods - is a clear message being sent to us by nature - by Mother Earth. If we keep raping and pillaging the land and seas, how long can we as a species hope to survive, much less prosper?

Yet, in the face of all these disasters it seems that very few people, particularly those who hold power, are listening to what the Mother is telling us.

Of course, we ignore her message at our own peril.

Lets pray for Colorado and help whatever mean we can, Good point Steve in this post! Floodings were out of proportions due to those many wildfires in the region.

Thanks for illuminating an important issue, Steve. Here in New York, fracking is on hold while the state Department of Health studies the issue. I hope they look to Colorado for what might happen. Yikes.

California, ironically, has just yesterday passed a bill which will allow fracking in our state. It seems they never learn. Thanks for commenting Connie.

Correct me if I am wrong Steve, but I heard that California lies on a huge Fault line . I do pray that those in authority in the area consider carefully the catastrophic outcome of unsettling that already fragile ground structure .
Bless you

We are indeed 'earthquake country', but when the corporations see profit to be made caution is thrown to the winds. /thanks for commenting Stella.

Thankyou for revealing this. Unfortunately it's up to us, the ordinary people to change things. Those in power worship it and money above even their own survival it appears. How crazy is that?

It is definitely crazy. Greed is an obsessive/compulsive disorder of extreme magnitude. Thanks for commenting C.D.
