Michelle Obama's Good Works

I have just moderated an article written by one of Wikinut's right wingers which is a mean-spirited hit piece on Michelle Obama, accusing her of having engaged in "thug politics" in Chicago and bringing her "thug politics" to Washington. The article trashed her for her alleged extravagance, and generally made her out to be a self-absorbed dilettante. This article is an attempt to set the record straight regarding Michelle's activities as the nation's First Lady.

Her campaign against childhood obesity

Early on during Barack Obama's first term, Michelle Obama decided to grow an organic vegetable garden at the White House, and she has used the garden as a teaching tool, bringing kids in from the inner city to teach them the joys of growing vegetables and the health benefits of eating them. This aligns with her work against childhood obesity, where she strives to educate kids and their parents about constructing healthier lifestyles.

White House luncheons

The First Ladies of America having White House Luncheons for congressional spouses has been a long tradition for presidential wives, but Michelle has added a new twist by adding to it a volunteer project. Last year the wives stuffed bags with canned goods for the Capital Area Food Bank, and this past summer she had those political families march six miles from the White House to work on the playground at the Imagine Southeast Public Charter School.

Helping non-profits

Michelle Obama visited Mary's Center, the community health center in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington early during her husband's first term. Her visit, which led to invitations to the center's staff to visit the White House to discuss the first Lady's anti-obesity agenda, led to a significant increase in its fund-raising success. In 2009, the center raised $953,092. Last year it raised $1,470,411.

Mary's Center President Maria Gomez tears up when she talks about Ms. Obama. It's "the power of having been connected to her. I don't come from money. I don't have a fancy home to entertain board members. So having her endorsement matters," says Gomez.

In 2009 Michelle served food to homeless men and women at Miriam's Kitchen, a non-profit food kitchen eight blocks from the White House. It, too, has experienced a significant bump in donations since the First Lady drew the world's attention there. The non-profit also became the recipient of excess produce grown at the White House kitchen garden. The organization's president, Scott Schenkelberg, says "I don't ever recall another administration having as much local presence...particularly Mrs. Obama. It's not just ceremonial." He also said that donations increased by over $50,000 as a result of her visits.

Mrs. Obama is anything but what the right wing makes her out to be.

Absolutely first-rate piece meriting a star! Regardless of her politics, Mrs. Obama has been a sterling First Lady. Glad you set the record straight.

Though I am no expert in this matter, I always felt Michelle Obama was warm and sincere making the extra effort to touch those who are marginalized. She has the common person's touch. Facts are facts, thanks Steve siva

I just want to set the record straight about my political leanings: I am NOT a right winger but a CONSERVATIVE. If Michelle Obama is engaging in all the identified good deeds above, it's a good thing; she should, what else is she going to do? My article was political satire based on facts.

Conservative - right wing, there's scarcely a difference. I am proudly left wing. Your article may have been satire, but it was mean in its tone and meant to portray her as self-absorbed, when she's anything but. And as to "what else is she going to do?" - well, she could be doing virtually nothing, as was the case with Laura Bush.

This truly warms my heart , Steve.
How easy it is to tear down those in the limelight , especially those who are in such positions by merit of their family ties...as is Michelle Obama ..
She deserves the accolade given here , and I certainly endorse it .
God bless you

Using her very prominent status for the good of the people of her country is both humbling and admirable of America's First Lady..

Steve, would you mind providing the link to the allegedly "mean-spirited piece on Michelle Obama." Some of us would like to judge for ourselves whether it was mean-spirited or not. Your judgments seem clouded by left-wing agenda.

I prefer to think my judgment is informed by my left leaning agenda, as is yours by your right-wing agenda. Thanks for commenting LeRain.
