More on President Marcos And His Martial Law

Do you know that only President Marcos who succeeded in serving in the country for three terms?

After winning over Diosdado Macapagal on the presidential election of Nov. 9, 1965... he achieved all the improvement in the government from Macapagal who is extravagant junkets abroad and failure to curb graft and corruption. Macapagal administration bequeathed serious problems and the government did not have any money left for essential services.

President Ferdinand Marcos had many achievements include the following;

1. Improvement of government financing through intensive tax collection, passage of new tax laws and securing loans from foreign banks and governments;

2. Increased rice production through the adoption of the "miracle rice" and other fast-growing rice seeds and giving financial and technical assistance to farmers;

3. Adoption of an infrastructure development program resulting in the construction of more roads, bridges, and schoolhouses, a light railway system, hydroelectric plants, geothermal plants, a new international airport, hotels, government buildings, hospitals, providing specialized services, housing projects, restoration of Intramuros and other historical landmarks, beautification of Luneta Park, and reclamation projects;

4. Implementation of the land reform program on a national scale;

5. Educational reforms such as the National College Entrance Examination, Study Now Pay Later plan, PRODED (Program for Decentralize Educational Development), special education for the gifted, mentally retarded, multiple-handicapped and artistically inclined;

6. Regionalization of the country into thirteen regions; and

7. Promulgation of the 1973 Constitution.

Proclaiming the Martial Law

President Marcos issued Proclamation 1081 which placed the whole country under Martial Law. The Power to place the country under martial law is embodied in Article VII, section 10, paragraph 2 of the 1935 Constitution which states "The President shall be commander-in-chief of all armed forces of the Philippinesand whenever it becomes necessary, he may call out such armed forces to prevent or suppress lawless violence, invasion, insurrection or rebellion".

He proclaimed martial law because of TWO reasons:

1. To save the Republic; and

2. To form the New Society - a society which is peaceful, self-sufficient, disciplined and orderly.

.... But I think the Martial law in Marcos Administration is not a good history in our country... but I've found Marcos have also good in his administration - all foods, gasolines, equipments and etc. don't go in higher price because he punished the one who want to sell high price of their products. Can you share your comments on this page if you like one of his rules that foods, things, etc. don't goes more expensive?
