This article breaks down five of the most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City when it comes to total crimes per 1,000 residents.

Midtown Manhattan

Midtown Manhattan, or simply Midtown, represents the central lengthwise portion of the borough and island of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire, the Chrysler Building, and the headquarters of the United Nations, and it contains world-renowned commercial zones such as Rockefeller Center, Broadway, and Times Square. Along Manhattan's north-south long axis, Midtown Manhattan separates Lower Manhattan from Upper Manhattan. In the past year, there have been 6 murders, 155 robberies, and 126 felony assaults. To my surprise, it is the most dangerous neighborhood in New York City.

Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen also known as Clinton and Midtown West is a neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, between 34th Street in the south, 59th Street in the north, Eighth Avenue in the east, and the Hudson River to the west. Hell’s Kitchen had 145 burglaries and 1200 thefts.

Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village often referred to by locals as simply "the Village", is a neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan, New York City. Greenwich Village has been known as an artists' haven, the Bohemian capital, the cradle of the modern LGBT movement, and the East Coast birthplace of both the Beat and the 1960s counterculture movements. The neighborhood also includes the West Village and the Washington Square Park area. Luckily, there haven’t been any murders, but there were more than 1100 crimes and 826 thefts.

East Harlem

East Harlem, also colloquially known as El Barrio and previously as Spanish Harlem, is a neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, New York City roughly encompassing the area north of the Upper East Side, and East 96th Street and east of Fifth Avenue to the East and Harlem Rivers. In the past year, East Harlem, which is my neighborhood, had 833 crimes, 3 murders, 163 robberies, and 270 felony assaults.

Bedford Stuyvesant

Bedford Stuyvesant is a neighborhood of 153,000 inhabitants in the north central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. According to the New York Police Department, in the past year, there were 4 murders, 256 felony assaults, and 54 stolen cars in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

great article, sadly the crime rate is what keeps many people from visiting New York.

In my area the most dangerous thing that has happened lately is that somebody drove away from the gas station without paying for their gas. And even that does not happen too often. Oh ya maybe somebody was fishing without a permit...

Shamarie, great article as always. I was very surprised to learn that Midtown Manhattan was the most dangerous neighborhood in New York City. Would you say that all the benefits of the city outweigh the bad? I love times square even though I've never been there. I would love to see the United Nations. Are the art museums as awesome as I think they are? Great pictures! Smiles to you today and always!

Shamarie, do you live with family or are you alone? I'm just wondering because I think New York City is so big it may seem lonely at times.

Yikes! Midtown? I would never have guessed. Bed Sty maybe, South Bronx maybe, but Midtown? Amazing.
