Two elderly people were reported missing from their home in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Crime scene

Dolye Chumney 88, and his wife Lillian Chumney 79, were reported missing on January 22, 2015. The couple failed to pick up their son on January 21, 2015. On the morning of January 22, their daughter went to their home to check on their welfare. When she arrived the door was open. When she entered the house it appeared to be ransacked. Their daughter called and alerted the police to the missing couple.

Searching

As soon as the warning went out that the couple was missing many law enforcement agencies began searching the area. I must say that law enforcement has been getting a bad rap lately but they did everything in their power to find the couple. It makes me feel proud that there are so many agencies in our state that were doing everything they could to find this couple. It was believed from the very beginning that something terrible happened to the couple. There were many prayers said for the couples safety. I prayed for them. I wanted them to be found safe and returned to their home.

Investigation

A call came in to the authorities that someone had seen a burned out car with two people in it. The police arrived on the scene and it was reported that it was the couple's car. We didn't know for a few hours what the authorities had found in their investigation. The desolate road was blocked off. News reporters were getting as close as they could but they didn't have anything to report. When it was reported that it was the couple my heart instantly went out to the family. I'm very sad to say they were deceased. I must send out blessings to the family, friends and neighbors of this wonderful couple. It brings tears to my eyes to even think about what was done to this couple. I'm hoping and praying that the people responsible for this crime are caught. The family is asking for help in finding the answers to what happened to the couple.

A Candlelight Vigil

The family held a candlelight vigil in front of the couple's home and at a church in town. My heart goes out to all of the people grieving for the couple. They said the couple loved to dance and Doyle could be seen outside raking his leaves on many days. People at the vigil collected money to give to the family. People are trying to help in any way that they can. The family is left with more questions than answers. I hope and pray that justice is served in this very sad case.

Special Task Force

There has been a special task force selected to help in bringing justice to this family. City, State and the FBI are part of the task force. I'm praying for closure for this family. I will never understand someone committing a crime like this. These murders are senseless.

Mark, I'm glad they found the guy but I wish the family could have had closure. I cannot understand how anyone could hurt someone else. It is so hard for me to understand this.

A sad case.

However, I can never understand why people talk about "closure" in such cases. This seems to imply that once somebody has been arrested, tried and jailed, the victims' family will be able to get on with their lives as though nothing has happened - the matter was "open" but is now "closed".

I respectfully suggest that it is nothing of the kind. It doesn't matter one iota - to them - whether whether somebody is punished or not - the loss to the family will be the same whatever happens afterwards.

The only really benefit to society of jailing the offenders is that they are prevented from doing something similar to somebody else - and I admit that that is a very important consideration.

John, I do know that the family will never be the same but I still feel that having the people that committed the crime behind bars is a much better scenario than thinking they are walking free. That is just not an option in my mind. That would be very hard on the family to think that the offenders got away with a senseless killing. I agree with your last sentence totally.

So sad the most vulnerable are targeted. We see that in the animal kingdom, but only for satiating hunger. We humans are above this and could be only for greed. Sorry to read about their fate Nancy - siva

Siva, thank you for stopping by to read my crime update. As I've said before I almost never write about crimes but in this case it wasn't too far from where I live and my heart goes out to the family. I'm sure you are right and it was greed. I shake my head in wonder at the evil that it would take to do this.

Were the murderer justified in coldblood killing innocent people?
Were they able to quench their thirst for madness upon seeing the couple lifeless? I pray for lightning to blow out the brains of those responsible. Blessings for you and your loved ones!

A heartbreaking story. The criminals who did this ought to be running for their lives, because a heinous act like this needs accounting.

LeRain, from what I have heard on the news they have 1 man in custody 21 years old and they are searching for a 29 year old suspect. Can you just imagine why in the world these two young guys would take this elderly couple's lives. I'm just sick over it. It's heartbreaking.

I can never fully understand why God doesn't play policeman himself in these happenings by creating a miraculous escape route for the victims.

On the other hand, we should not cry vengeance either in my mind, but we should punish the perpetrators, without becoming like them to them in return.

With the rise of terrorists in the world, too many people want to return terror with terror now in a way, and kill all of them off too.

I am not really sure what the answer is, but I don't think an eye for an eye is the right answer.

Thanks for this article Nancy

Spirited, this crime was so horrendous that I just don't know what to think. I've had to stop and pray for the couple and their family a few times since this has happened. What should be done in cases like this? I don't know.

Murder is such a devastating thing for the family of the victims to try to deal with. There is no such thing as closure when someone you love is murdered. It effects you for your whole life. My prayers go up for the family of this couple who were taken from them in such a wicked act.
