Van Gundy has not coached in the league since he was fired by the Rockets at the end of the 2006-07 basketball season.

Former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets basketball coach Jeff Van Gundy on Wednesday has been interviewed by officials of the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Pelicans fired Monty Williams at the end of the 2014-2015 basketball season after the Pelicans lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the Western Conference Playoff series.
The Pelicans have also interviewed Golden State Warriors assistant coach Alvin Gentry for the vacant coaching position in New Orleans.
Another coaching candidate that could be interviewed by the Pelicans officials is current Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau. The catch is that Thibodeau is under contract with the Bulls. Thibodeau cannot be interviewed by the officials of the Pelicans since Thibodeau is still employed by the Bulls at this time.
If Thibodeau gets terminated by the Bulls management, he will become a candidate to coach the Pelicans.
The Warriors officials are not going to allow Gentry to be interviewed by the officials of the Pelicans until the end of the 2015 Western Conference Finals which could end on Wednesday if the Warriors who have a 3-1 series lead over the Houston Rockets can win Game Five of the best of seven series on Wednesday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland California.
If the Pelicans officials decide to hire Gentry as their new head coach to succeed Williams as the next basketball coach, the Pelican will have to wait until the end of the Warriors basketball season since the Warriors do not need a distraction during the remainder of the playoffs.
Van Gundy has stated that he would love to return to coach in the National Basketball Association despite enjoying his work as an analyst of National Basketball Association games with ESPN.
The next basketball coach of the Pelicans would have the chance of coaching center and power forward Anthony Davis who is the next basketball player that has a future of being an elite basketball star in the league.
