Nobel Prize Winner's life honoured

AS the life and works of Nobel prize winning poet Seamus Heaney is to be further honoured, following a series of events today in the Republic of Ireland.

In an Assembly Written Answer published recently Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Caral Ní Chuilín said her department was considering how best to mark Heaney's life in consultation with the late poet's family and the Northern Ireland Arts Council.

The answer will reverberate with many in Northern Ireland as the Republic of Ireland has already moved forward in celebrating Heaney, who was born in County Londonderry.

Today (April 23rd, 2014) a tapestry was unveiled in Dublin Airport by Paul Simon, who along with the poet's admirers such as U2 singer Bono paid for the work.

In addition Seamus Heaney's work is to be marked in the National Concert Hall as part of Dublin's One City, One Book festival.

However, the tentative moves to celebrate Seamus Heaney's life in Northern Ireland could hold promise for a lengthy.

The written answer by Minister Ní Chuilían followed a question from Dominic Bradley MLA, asking for consideration of an annual Seamus Heaney Poetry Month.

"I support the concept of establishing a fitting memorial to acknowledge and celebrate Seamus Heaney's significant contribution to the arts," said the Minister in her written response. "My department is considering how this meaningful legacy can best be achieved, through ongoing consultation with the Heaney Family and the Arts Council."
