Former Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, 33, has been released by the Oakland Raiders on Monday. Schaub was the backup to rookie quarterback Derek Carr during the 2014 football season. Christian Ponder will replace Schaub on the roster in 2015.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Schaub is now a free agent.

On Monday the Oakland Raiders have decided to release their quarterback Matt Schaub, 33. who was the former quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans.
Schaub was traded by the Houston Texans before the start of the 2014 football season for the Raiders sixth round draft pick. The Texans got the better end of the deal since the sixth round draft the Texans selected was running back Alfred Blue who rushed for 528 yards for the Texans in 2014.
Schaub started his career with the Atlanta Falcons as a third round draft choice of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2004 National Football League Draft of the University of Virginia
Schaub was with the Falcons franchise from 2004-2006 before was traded to the Houston Texans for the Falcons second round draft picks in the 2007 and 2008 National Football League Draft.
Schaub during training camp in 2014 lost his starting quarterback position to rookie Derek Carr. The Raiders on Friday signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder who was a free agent after the Vikings released recently.
Ponder will be competing against Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin who is in his third year as the National Football League.
By releasing Schaub on Monday, the Raiders save $5,5 million dollars that will be used to sign free agent players before the 2015 football season.
Schaub has the options to retire after playing 11 seasons in the National Football League. His other option is that another football team in the league will sign him as a backup quarterback before the start of the 2015 football season.
It appears that Schaub's best days as a starting quarterback are behind him.

Thanks for sharing such a great article. If I were Schaub, I'd retire and start a new career. Smiles to you this morning.

I agree with you Nancy. Matt was the butt of jokes in his final year as the quarterback of the Texans before he was traded to the Raiders for his poor play on the gridiron.
