Proved: The Light Speed Can be Slowed

The speed of light is one of the fundamental constants in physics, but scientists at the University of Glasgow this week announced that they have managed to find a way to slow light in free space, something that has never been achieved before. Scottish physician has successfully slow pace, in which light moves through the air for the first time.

The Light Particles

Known for his Law of Universal Gravitation, English physicist Sir Isaac Newton (1643 to 1727) realized that light had frequency-like properties when he used a prism to split sunlight into its component colors. Nevertheless, he thought that light was a particle because the periphery of the shadows it created was extremely sharp and clear.
And then, the theory of light being a particle completely vanished until the end of the 19th century when Albert Einstein revived it. Now that the dual nature of light as "both a particle and a wave" has been proved, its essential theory was further evolved from electromagnetic into quantum mechanics. Einstein believed light is a particle (photon) and the flow of photons is a wave. The main point of Einstein's light quantum theory is that light's energy is related to its oscillation frequency. He maintained that photons have energy equal to "Planck's constant times oscillation frequency," and this photon energy is the height of the oscillation frequency while the intensity of light is the quantity of photons. The various properties of light, which is a type of electromagnetic wave, are due to the behavior of extremely small particles called photons that are invisible to the naked eye.

Beam of Light

A light beam or beam of light is a directional projection of light energy radiating from a light source. Sunlight forms a light beam (a sunbeam) when filtered through media such as clouds, foliage, or windows. To artificially produce a light beam, a lamp and a parabolic reflector is used in many lighting devices such as spotlights, car headlights, PAR Cans and LED housings.
Light from certain types of laser has the smallest possible beam divergence. Visible to the light beams that is from the side, a beam of light is only visible if part of the light is scattered by objects: tiny particles like dust, water droplets (mist, fog, rain), hail, snow, or smoke, or larger objects such as birds. If there are many objects in the light path, then it appears as a continuous beam, but if there are only a few objects, then the light is visible as a few individual bright points. In any case, this scattering of light from a beam, and the resultant visibility of a light beam from the side, is known as the Tyndall effect.

The Scientists Opinion

Scientists have long known that the speed of light can be slightly slowed by passing the atomic structure of materials that have a high density such as water and glass. However, slowing the speed of light particles (photons) in free space is impossible. It was then.
In a journal paper recently published in Science Express on Friday, January 23, 2015, researchers from the University of Glasgow and the University of Heriot-Watt explained that they had succeeded in slowing the speed of light particles in free space for the first time. They explained that by providing a barrier on the lens will provide the spatial structure of the light particles that can slow down the speed of the light particles. Daniel Giovannini, one of the main authors in the journal said: "The delay (deceleration) light is performed on structured light is still small-scale, measured at a distance of several micrometers with propagation distance of one meter, but the results are significant. We have measured the effect same in the two types of beams, known as Bessel beam and Gaussian beam".
  2. Co-lead Jacquiline Romero said: "We have successfully did a little slow down the speed of light. These findings indicate that the beam of light can be slowed below the figure the speed of light in general is 299,792,458 meters per second in the free air or vacuum. Although we use a single photon particle, this slowdown will also apply for a brighter light beam. The effect is greatest when the lens is used to make a great light with a small focused light, that is to say, this effect is only valid for a short distance."
  3. Professor Padgett added: "It may seem surprising when the light can be slowed down like this, but the effect has a clear theoretical foundation and we are confident that our observations are correct. These results give us a new way to think about the properties of light and we want to continue explore the potential of this invention in future applications. We expect that this effect will apply to all wave theory, so that a similar slowdown could also be made in a sound wave."

Conclusions & The Data Credits

So to strengthen the existing information that the paper has been published under the titled: "Photons that spatially structured Travel in Free Space Slower than the Speed of Light", published in Science Express, which provides electronic publication of selected ahead of print in the journal Science.     “That the speed of light in free space is constant is a cornerstone of modern physics. However, light beams have finite transverse size, which leads to a modification of their wave vectors resulting in a change to their phase and group velocities. We study the group velocity of single photons by measuring a change in their arrival time that results from changing the beam’s transverse spatial structure. Using time-correlated photon pairs we show a reduction of the group velocity of photons in both a Bessel beam and photons in a focused Gaussian beam. In both cases, the delay is several micrometers over a propagation distance of the order of 1 m. Our work highlights that, even in free space, the invariance of the speed of light only applies to plane waves.”

Many, many years in school ago we learnt about the properties of both waves and particles and how there were many techniques to speed up or slow down both, so it always seemed peculiar to me that in later to me when discussing light and Einstein's equation that he should treat light as a constant, I never agreed with that concept, the speed of light is an average, not a constant.

Excellent and exceptional knowledge of Physics, it is true with your comment above sir, but when if we adjusted to the original theory of Newton. I agree with you on this matter, but as far as proof (laboratory tests) has not been done for the constant proof, it is automatically a lot of opinions and more research using the Einstein concept. I think so.

Certainly so, but in science that is unexpected things could be happen or be proved either through engineering, data analysis and scientific analysis or by using other means. all of which it is a science that must be examined carefully and in accordance validity of literature that have been done by previous researchers.
Thank you for an interesting response and this is certainly a biggest challenge concerning to this topic. Specially for people or researchers who are in the field of physics science.
