Obituary for rock drummer AJ Pero who died unexpectedly March 20.

AJ Pero

Drummer AJ Pero of the metal rock bands Twisted Sister and Adrenaline Mob died March 20 at the age of 55. On tour at the time of his death, Pero is believed to have died from a heart attack after bandmates could not awaken him on the tour bus. The band was in Poughkeepsie, New York at the time.

One of Pero's best known moments was in the video for “We're Not Gonna Take It” when he hit a snare drum filled with glitter, sending the colourful dust flying.

Pero was with the multi platinum selling Twisted Sister from 1982 to 1986 and then rejoined the band in 1997. Pero was the drummer for Twisted Sister on every one of the band's albums except “Love is for Suckers”.

He was also a member of Adrenaline Mob. He has also been a member of Cities, and Circle of Thorns.

He was born Anthony Jude Pero waa born in Staten Island, New York in October of 1959. AJ quickly moved beyond the pots and pans in mom's kitchen whe his parents bought little AJ his first drum set at age three. He moved on to the “real” thing at age four. He took lessons from the legendary drummer Gene Krupa.

A seven year old AJ gave his first professional performance on the “Mike Douglas Show” before a live television audience and for viewers across America. Next came the Muscular Dysthopy Telethon with Jerry Lewis. A 10 year old AJ was one member of a trio that played the music of Dave Brubeck and Charlie Parker.

Things quickly escalated for young AJ. The eleven year old not only performed at school; he also performed at local establishments and events. And when the drummer for a college band broke his leg, young AJ sat in for a three week European tour that included winning three gold medals at the Paris Jazz Festival for his drumming.

AJ was asked to join a band right after high school. Blown away by his musical ability and technique, the band hired AJ right away...the band was a group of heavy metal rockers called Twisted Sister. AJ and the band went on to earn 32 album awards including a triple platinum award for “Stay Hungry”; and has gone on to sell over 20 million albums around the world.
